Michael Andrew is now five for five with national age group records in the 100 breaststroke. Over the course of his last five swims, Andrew has taken down the 17-18 national age group record every single time. Tonight, the seventeen-year-old out of Indie Swimming finished fourth in the 100 breast final with 59.82.
His onslaught of national age group records in the event started with the Omaha Cup, where he went 1:00.46 in prelims and 1:00.37 in finals.
Then, he moved on to the U.S. Olympic Trials, also in Omaha, where he swam 59.96 in prelims, 59.85 in semifinals, and 59.82 tonight in finals.
Andrew’s record is faster than the latest recognized FINA Junior World Record, though not as fast as the 59.64 that Chinese 18-year old Wang Lizhuo swam in April of this year.
Andrew, who is believed to be the youngest pro swimmer in history when he made the leap at age 14, ranks as the 10th-fastest American of any age in the history of this event.

MA DISAPPOINTED me!
The least he could have done is QUALIFY!
and he didn’t even do that!!!!!!
Gyurta, Phelps, Thorpe, Goodell, B. Hackett… (any other I have forgotten?) HAD WON Olympics medal at his age!!!!!!
Phelps didn’t win his first Olympic medal until he was 19
Phelps was 19, micheal just turned 17. We should build up our athletes not tear them down. His 59.8 is the fastest ever at his age, only .25 from what won a bronze medal in 2012
Not really against MA or the method but the application training ( training alone) as an athlete and coach makes me question him reaching full potential. I think a few training partners will squeeze more out of his natural gifts. Time will tell!!
At this pace, he could possibly make his first World Championships team next year. In my book, he’s the true WJR holder. Also, the only guy to improve his time from prelims, to semis, to finals.
Really looking forward to what Cordes has in store for the 200.
Awesome job by Michael to make finals and do a best time. In a tough field with a lot of pressure surrounding this race, Michael Andrew was the only swimmer to drop time from semis to finals. I can’t wait to watch the rest of his events.
The kid has done everything against the norm and many doubted if it would work… Whether you like it or not he is popular media material. He’s a humble grounded kid doing great things and could potentially be representing our country for years to come… Be a team player, support him in his efforts to help keep USA swimming the best in the world…
How about we save the MA articles for when he actually accomplishes something like win a Gold medal. He swam faster than any 17 year old ever you say? Meaningless. His time would have won the Gold medal in 2004 in Athens? Meaningless. I’m a Michael Andrew hater so I will never be happy with anything he does. Once he wins 9 Gold medals (50 free, 100 free, 100 br, 100 fl, 100 ba, 200IM, 3 relays) in 2020 I’ll explain to you why he should have won 10.

no worries man. i’m a big MA fan. I don’t honestly think he’ll win 9 Gold medals but I do think he could win multiple medals in the future.
Why? Why are you a hater? I’ve known Michael and his family since he was six years old. I’m 51 years old. I’ve never known a nicer more humble, giving, well rounded young man his age in my life. Spend a day fishing for bass with him, then tell me you’re a hater. That kid has nothing but love and hope for everybody he’s ever competed against. Yes, he’s blessed with great genes, and he’s always been a great competitor. He’s also always had a mental edge although I think he has further developed that edge. But this shouldn’t have been a response to shehulkswim’s obvious satire (which exaggerates what some commenters like Bobo Gigi usually said about MA)
