19 year-old Townley Haas touched veteran Conor Dwyer by 0.01 seconds to win the final of the men’s 200 free, securing a spot on the 2016 U.S. Olympic Swim Team. After the race, he spoke with the media about the race itself, the rest of the week, and his teammates, Jack Conger and Clark Smith, who also finished in the top 6.
Townley on his reaction immediately after the race:
I didn’t know until I looked up, even still. I was still in shock, I guess. I think I’m still a little in shock.
On having three other Longhorns in the race:
It’s incredible. I mean, you know, you have the two greatest coaches in the world, Eddie and Kris, training us, pushing us, and, you know, I swim next to or behind Clark every day and, you know, it’s just — I guess it’s just not that surprising, knowing how hard we work and how great of coaches they are and — but it’s just incredible for me and all three of us to be able to represent our school in the Olympics.
What’s awesome about this is he’s just a 19 year old kid. Who wins the 200m free at the US Olympic trials at age 19? I get the impression he doesn’t over think/analyze things which is good for his nerves and being able to handle these situations.
I believe some guy named Michael Phelps won the 200 free at Olympic trials just after celebrating his 19th birthday. But Big Haas out up a better time 1:46.2 vs 1:45.6
Joe Hudepohl won the 200 free in 1992 at 18 yrs old (qualifying for 400 free relay as well). Haas’ time is very impressive. Bright future ahead!!
