After a rough prelims swim yesterday, Michael Chadwick swam a 100 free time trial after prelims today, going 48.9.
Chadwick, who pitched his name into the speculative (and early) hat for 4×100 free relay contenders with a lifetime best 48.87 from last July, was just 49.61 yesterday morning, missing the top 16 altogether. He was 18th overall– 16th went to Matt Grevers at 49.55, and a Ryan Lochte scratch left Chadwick at 17th with all things said and done going into semifinals.
After a poor start and breakout, Chadwick was set back too far to put up a solid time in his prelims swim– that 48-high from his time trial is much more impressive.
It took a 49.18 to make top eight out of semifinals, with the top six seeds tonight at 48.75 or faster, so Chadwick’s time trial indicates that he could have been fast enough to be in the final. Time trials don’t count for purposes of selecting the team, but in the event that Chadwick makes the team in the 50 free later this week, today’s time trial could earn him consideration on the 4×100 free relay, depending on how things work out.
Super weird that both he and 2012 Olympian Sarah Lawrence had the same mishap on their starts. One arm kind of buckled on the dive. Hope he can stay motivated and come back strong. Super nice guy.
Oops–sorry, Micah Lawrence! (c:
This makes me happy. Super good kid, I wish all the best for him and I hope he doesn’t stop swimming. He has the potential to be something good for the US going forward.
After tonight’s final Adrian, dressel, held and Ervin are on the squad automatically. Given that MP, Lochte, Conger and Dwyer are also on the team
and could be used for either relay there is no need for extra “relay only” squad members
I think tonight’s swims by Adrian, Dressel, Held and Ervin have put to rest any talk about pulling in non-100 top 6 swimmers. Dressell and Held are the future of American sprint free.
I think he messed up his start and just wanted to prove to himself that he had it in him. Hopefully this gives him the confidence he needs to make the final in the 50.
This proves that Chadwick can win. Unfortunately, just when no one else is in the pool.
Isn’t it all about racing and performing under pressure? If there’s a time trial Olympics, like fantasy football or rotisserie baseball he can be in that. Who wants a 49+ on our relay v
Chadwick making the team in the 50 free?
Well. It’s more likely to see Dara Torres make the team in 2020.
Speaking of Dara Torres, she was in the great daily show of Ariana Kukors.
Clear she prepares Tokyo! 😆
Impressed by her daughter too. She’s so cute. Michele Tafoya, take care, because she wants to take your place soon! 🙂
