As we predicted earlier, Matt Grevers no-showed the men’s 50 free prelims this morning, his final entry of the meet. After missing the Olympic team in the 100 back, 100 free, and 200 back, Grevers said that “there’s no room for me“; and it’s now evident that he was planning on ending his meet with the 200 back.
Grevers came into the 50 free seeded tenth with 22.22.
Also no-showing heat 18 of the 50 free prelims was Seth Stubblefield of California Aquatics. Stubblefield was seeded seventh in the event with 22.15. He most likely scratched in order to focus on the 100 fly. Stubblefield comes into the 100 fly seeded tenth with 52.31.
Caeleb Dressel of the Bolles School Sharks scored the top time in the 50 free heats this morning with 21.76, followed by SwimMAC’s Anthony Ervin. Ervin’s SwimMAC teammate Cullen Jones came in close behind with 21.84.
However, it was fourth place Nathan Adrian who looked the strongest this morning. Adrian finished in 21.96, but he completely shut it down about ten meters from the wall, still winning his heat easily.
god, that quote from Grevers is heartbreaking. It’s always hard to see someone swimming at an elite level swim INCREDIBLY fast and still miss out on representing his country.
I just wish Grievers would have swam this 50 anyway. It’s a splash and dash – only a 50, who knows? I would like to see him end his career fighting rather than sitting up in the stands skipping his race.
I think that Shields is going 50.75, and if MP can beat that, then the two of them are going to swim it in Rio.
Yes, I agree. Looks like Shields will break 51 seconds. A 50+ will be needed to make the team IMHO. This unexpectedly sets up for maybe the most exciting race of the meet. I thought the 200 free was exciting – now thinking about all the possibilities of who might make the top 2 in this event, this race just might be the race of the meet. MP will definitely need to bring his “A” game to make the top 2.
Look out for Stubblefield in the 100 fly. The cal bears are on fire and he set a pb at santa clara 3 weeks ago. Also Tom Shields will be a tremendous contender for the win tomorrow if Phelps is not at his absolute best.
