Great Britain Wins Four Gold on Day 2 of European Junior Championships

2016 EUROPEAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

British swimmers took four events on the second day of the European Junior Championships in Hódmezővásárhely, Hungary, but Russian Kiliment Kolesnikov had the swim of the night. Kolesnikov started the night with a new world junior record in the men’s 100 backstroke. Kolesnikov won the event in a time of 53.65 breaking the record of 53.67 set by Canadian Javier Acevedo at the Canadian Olympic Trials in April.

Emily Large won the nation’s first gold of the evening taking the women’s 200 butterfly in a time of 2:08.87.

Freya Anderson had a strong second 50 meters to win the women’s 100 freestyle in a time of 54.72. Anderson was able to over take Barbora Seemanova of the Czech Republic who had the lead at the halfway point. Seemanova finished second in a time of 54.97.

Anderson’s time broke the British age group record for 15 year olds beating the previous mark of 55.40 put up by Fran Halsall.

Tazmin Pugh came out on top in her battle with Tatiana Salcutan of Moldova and Polina Egorova of Russia for gold in the women’s 200 backstroke. Pugh hit the wall in a time of 2:11.12 followed by Salcutan who finished in a time of 2:11.69 and Egorova who posted a 2:11.79.

Salcutan’s time was a new Moldovan record beating her own mark of 2:13.78 which she put up in January.

Tom Derbyshire won the final individual event of the evening taking the men’s 1500 freestyle in a time of 15:08.31. Derbyshire was followed by Albert Escritis of Spain who posted a 15:11.60 and Victor Johansson of Sweden who touched in a time of 15:15.24.

Johansson broke the Swedish national record in the event beating the previous record of 15:17.01, which was posted by Stefan Persson in 1987.

Hungarian Ajna Kesely won the women’s 400 freestyle in a time of 4:08.10. Holly Hibbott of Great Britain finished second in a time of 4:08.40 breaking the British record of 4:10.99 set by Anne Bochmann in 2010.

Other winners included:

  • Men’s 100 backstroke – Kliment Kolesnikov (Russia) – 53.65
  • Men’s 200 breaststroke – Kirill Mordashev (Russia) – 2:11.18
  • Mixed 4 x 100 freestyle relay – Russia – 3:29.47

Fastest qualifiers in the semi-finals of each event:

  • Men’s 100 freestyle – Alessandro Miressi (Italy) – 59.41
  • Men’s 200 IM – Lorenzo Glessi (Italy) – 2:01.55
  • Men’s 200 butterfly – Athanasios-Charalamp Kynigakis (Greece) – 1:58.29

And how do you define doing something important in your life?

My comment might have been a bit harsh: Those two are clearly outstanding talents and only very few swimmers will ever be able to win a gold at junior european championships, BUT:
They are barely top 30 in world ranking and wouldnt even come close to an olympic or world championships final. IF they ever make an olympic/world championships final, then they really “deserve” fanboys. Of course you can say that they are very nice persons or have a great technique, but please dont hype EVERY talent and predict crazy times, obviously not all of them will continue to progress.

In case someone is interested:
21.88 in mens 50 free prelims for Wierling and 51.49 for Deibler in mens 100 fly prelims.
Our medley relay currently would look like this:
Glania 53.61, Deibler 51.49, Vom Lehn 59.87, Wierling 48.54

Thomaslurzfan is wired. I agree with DEE.

He says.it,s crazy how much fanboys these 15 yo girls already have and it,s also a bit worrying. Disgusting comment.

It,s disgusting because we all know changes in the body at puberty can affect performance. It,s a known fact. Increase in body fat may enhance buoyancy but reduce speed and leg strength. Holly hibbot has gained weight and I agree that slimming down may help as she has a pretty good technique.

Freya Anderson is tall ( for a 14 yo). This along with her fluid stroke is a good advantage to have.

I don’t know what thomaslurzfan is talking about when he says fanboys. Those so called “fanboys” are just stating a… Read more »

No its not a fact, if you really see it as a fact, than you should follow an other sport because you clearly have no clue about swimming. You dont just get faster by getting bigger or lighter, there have been tons of counterexamples, many girls have become slower when they got out of puberty, its almost a common thing. Therefore its unreasonable to assume that Hibbot and Large will get faster for sure, you just cant tell, so stop this stupid hype when they have done nothing of importance in their life.

Pretty slow times overall, especially in womens 100 free and womens 200 back, its really sad that many of the best talents dont compete here. Mens 100 back and womens 400 free were won by a guy born in 2000 and Kesely (born in 2001), those were clearly the highlights today. Winning times in mens 1500 free and womens 200 fly were also pretty good but not quite in the same category.

In the 100? 54.72 is the second fastest winning time in the history of the EJSC. Only Steenbergen last year was faster.

100 back was the standout, by a LONG way. I’d argue a 2.08 fly by a 2001 born girl is closer to world class than a 4.08 by a 2001 born girl, too.

But that’s all just opinions aha

I have a nice bet for you: I bet that you wont be able to not quote me in the next 7 days.
Do you sit in front of your computer all the time just waiting for me to comment here?
Yes, we both have a opinion, but your opinion is just wrong, please try to troll better next time. Kesely wouldve finished 10th at the last world championships, Large wouldve finished 13th at the last world championships. So yeah, 13th is closer to world class than 10th …
Not to talk about the fact that Kesely is about half a year younger than Large, but you made it clear enough that you are not interested in… Read more »

Where have I mentioned Large’s height as a positive OR Hibbott’s weight as a hindrance? All I’ve said is Anderson is a huge talent – Something most people (from all countries) agree with after seeing her swim.

The last line of your comment is actually completely disgusting and way beyond acceptable – Seems to be suggesting something sinister at worst and strange at best. I’ll be emailing the moderators to havd it looked at.

I’m really not sure what I have done or said to you to justify you have such an on-going attitude. We’re all adults – Civility isn’t hard.

Do you have too much time and just want to troll or is your reading comprehension just really that bad?
I talked about british fans, not about you in person. I dont have to quote, everyone can read that someone suggested that Hibbot and Large will get clearly faster when becoming less heavy/bigger and at least one other person agreed with it, i am sure both of them were british fans …
I hate that reasoning and its just stupid, like all the fans who were sure that Ledecky/Vollmer/Dwyer would be much faster at the trials, because they were so fast untapered in-season or all the american fans who really thought that Dressel or Hoffer could be medal… Read more »

I’m sorry you see it that way – I made a comment disagreeing in a polite way. I did also point out that these are all just opinions.

Do you just try and cause conflict in the comments section? I seem to remember you getting all shouty at Bobo a few months ago with pretty much none existent points then too.

I mean, what’s the deal man?

Kliment Kolesnikov looks like an incredible talent – 53.6 born in 2000? Scary? Really scary. Tarasevich, Rylov, Kolesnikov.. US will have a backstroke threat in a few years!

Amazing day for GBR – Big PBs for all our swimmers generally.

Tom Derbyshire is metronomic – 3.57 400 yesterday, and his 400 split en-route to his 1500 PB was only 3s off that. 14s PB – Can’t ask for more!

Freya Anderson is 15 btw – Her record broke Halsall’s old mark of 55.59! She is not swimming anymore freestyle this week, so we’ll have to wait to see her 200 in the 4×2.

Tazmin Pugh, Anderson’s team-mate at Ellesmere Col, also a 2s PB for backstroke gold.… Read more »

I don’t know what to think about the Russians. We’ll see in the senior competitions if they confirm.

Your Freya is impressive.

That’s exactly what I was thinking earlier. Considering how much the Russians dominate the junior competitions, it seems like a very small proportion of them manage to transition to the senior level. Almost strangely so.

Indeed that is a concern – Something we used to see more with East Asian swimmers but I agree, the Russian’s are developing earlier & earlier.

I am very excited by Freya – Very tall, beautiful long stroke, powerful & efficient kick, great range from 50-400 & 50-200 breast.

Emily Large on the other hand, pretty small from looking on the live stream. The German girl who came second towered above her. It’ll be interesting to see what she does if she has a growth spurt (assuming it doesn’t throw her stroke out).

Hibbot at least 5-7kg heavier than last year, at one point 10kg after trials.
Amazing technique and great racer, when she drops weight again she’s going sub 8.20 in the next two years.
Not swimming it here but 200fly, she’s a 2.08 girl when ready done some amazing training on fly.

Yes – Standing beside Kesely that was noticable but I don’t think we should get *too* hung up on girls’ body shapes are her age. They are developing, hips are ‘growing’ out & fat deposits, Holly moreso than other swimmers her age.

If she can slim out, she will be superbly fast.
