Watch: The Antics of Gold Medal Mel In the Aquazone

2016 U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS

While at the 2016 U.S Olympic Trials Olympic gold medallist and SwimSwam co-founder Gold Medal Mel (Mel Stewart) had some fun in the Aquazone (the area designated at the Olympic Trials with booths set up ect.) signing autographs and joking around with the mascots.

You can see Gold Medal Mel in the video above signing autographs and posing for pictures with young swimming fans.

Gold Medal Mel was one of the many Olympians who came through to meet with fans in the Aquazone and sign autographs as a member of the USA Swimming Foundation. At trials, Gold Medal Mel presented Michael Phelps with his gold medal in the 200m butterfly.

Gold Medal Mel won three Olympic medals including two gold at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. His most notable performance was a gold in the 200m butterfly.

Stewart was the world record holder in the 200m butterfly, breaking Michael Gross’ record in January of 1995. His record stood until June of 1995.

Stewart’s world record time of 1:55.69 would have placed second at these Olympic trials, giving him a spot on the Olympic team.
