On each day of the official Olympic torch relay, carrying the Olympic flame to the Olympic cauldron in Rio de Janeiro, the Rio2016 Facbeook page is posting brilliant and spectacular images from one of the world’s unique and most beautiful landscapes. Each day until August 5th, we will bring you these stunning images.
On day 66 of the torch relay the torch continued to travel through the state of Rio Grande do Sul, hitting São Lourenço do Sul, Camaquã, Guaíba, and Porto Alegre.
São Lourenço do Sul directly borders Lagoa Dos Patos, the biggest lagoon in Brazil. It has a population of over 43,000. Camaquã is north of São Lourenço do Sul, with a population of over 53,000.
The torch then travelled to Guaíba and Porto Alegre. Guaíba is a city located in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, on the shoreline of the Guaíba Lake with a population approaching 100,000. Porto Alegre is the largest city in Rio Grande do Sul, and is the capital. It has a population of over 1,500,000 (making it the tenth most populous city in the country). It is also the centre of Brazil’s fourth largest metropolitan area with over 4,400,000 inhabitants.
