Today Calvyn Justus uploaded a Youtube video that chronicles his journey to his final training trip before the Olympics.
Justus is a rising South African star who has broken into the international scene in the past couple of years. At the Commonwealth Games in 2014 he earned two relay medals, and qualified for his first World Cup in Doha. There, he made the final heat in the 200 free and ended up finishing 8th.
Most recently, Justus swam at the the South African Trials, where he placed 4th in the 200 free (1:49.63). At the meet, Justus was also a part of the 4×100 medley relay which time trialed the event in hopes for an Olympic berth. Justus anchored the relay in a split of 49.74 to finish in an overall time of 3:33.80, under the required 3:34.70. As a result, the relay qualified for Rio and gave Justus his first chance to compete at the Olympics.
Justus’ video takes the viewers with him through every step of the trip. The video starts with Justus walking through the airport before his 16-hour flight to Fort Lauderdale. Next, he talks to us from the airplane explaining how hard it is to sit through the flight before arriving in New York’s JFK.
After the connection and Justus’ arrival in Florida, he goes to the hotel and then straight to the market to pick up some groceries for the upcoming training days. The final scenes include footage of Justus and his team working out at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex.
