On night 2 of the 2016 LA Invite, the women got things started with the 800 free final, which saw 3 women swim under 9 minutes. Winning the event was Riley Spitser, who swam the race in 8:51.07. Narrowly behind her was Arizona’s Emma McCarthy (8:51.63) and her teammate Claire Lockridge (8:52.95).
The closest race of the evening came in the women’s 100 free. Olympic Trials finalist Katrina Konopka and Liliana Ibanez were neck and neck heading towards the wall, but Konopka got her hand there first by a hundredth in 55.67 to Ibanez’s 55.68.
On the men’s side, a trio of Russian teammates swept the podium places in the 100 free, led by former USC Trojan Vlad Morozov in 49.08. Rounding out the top 3 were Alex Suhrokov (49.25) and Nikita Lobstinev (49.67), who were also sub-50 tonight.
Wisconsin’s Matt Hutchins led the field in the men’s 400 free, winning the race in 3:54.10. Also under 4:00 for 2nd place was Olympic Trials finalist Chris Wieser, who touched in 3:56.73.
Another Olympic Trials finalist and Wieser’s teammate at the University of Arizona, Justin Wright, posted a convincing win in the men’s 200 fly. Wright won the event by almost 2 seconds, clocking a 2:00.44 to beat out Connor Wilkins (2:02.23).
