At the Team USA Olympic Team training camp in San Antonio, Team USA Olympian Missy Franklin sat down with the press to talk about the upcoming Rio Games. Franklin, who won 4 gold medals at the 2012 Olympics, will be swimming the 200 back, 200 free, and the free relays in Rio. She’ll be looking to defend her title in the 200 back, which she won in London with a World Record time of 2:04.06.
During the conference, Franklin talked about the way things have been going at Team USA’s training camp in Rio. Her coach, Todd Schmitz, was able to head to camp to coach her for the weekend, but won’t be traveling with her to Rio.
She also talks about the energy the newcomers bring to the team, and how they help push the veterans as much as the veterans push them. Some of her Olympic teammates are people she’s swam with since she was an age grouper. At just 21, Franklin is already considered a veteran, and believes she has a lot to pass on to the newcomers on the team.
Another thing Franklin believes is important to her swimming is the team aspect of the sport, which she says was a big benefit of college swimming. She believes swimming in college taught her how to rely on her teammates and enjoy the benefits of working towards a common goal.

Some of you guys have waaaaay too much time on your hands. The hate on Missy amazes me. Aren’t we all (or most anyway) part of USA Swimming and therefore on the same “team?” Give her a break and wish her well.

Another fake interview
Why “fake”? Seems to me that’s mostly who she is… Bubbly, positive, cheerful. Well spoken. Polite. Enunciates well. Glass half full. Smiles and laughs a lot. Hmm. Yeah, those are terrible traits. Those will not serve her well after swimming. Yes, Virginia, that was sarcasm.
I’ve never understood this phenomenon. The hate on Missy Franklin because she’s bubbly during interviews thing. I could see it if secretly she was a terrible person. I’ve never read or heard anywhere that she’s a terrible person. So, what is it exactly?
seriously, if all these people think that missy isn’t being her true self then they must not know anyone personally who has a similar personality type. it can certainly be exhausting and suspicious at times, but hating on positivity? come on…
Sure, a lot of nice people are around. But why do I need to be reminded by dozens of NBC commercials how nice Franklin is as a person during already short coverage of US Olympic Trials. I prefer the situation when NBC can focus on Franklin’s great performances instead. Earning money by being nice is not nice, I think.
Why the article says that she will swim free relayS. I thought she is qualified for 4×200 only. Is there any new information about who will swim prelim and final at 4×100 free relay?
The 200back isn’t the only title that she will defend. She is the Olympic Champion at 800 relay as well.
Coaches can select any swimmer already in the team to swim relays.
The only difference thus year is that relay only swimmer will have to swim at least one time.
Among Vollmer, Schmitt, Ledecky, Worrell and Franklin I think that Missy will be the last one to be selected to swim 400 relay. It is too sad for the swimmer who was #1 American sprinter just recently for at least four years. She still was good at freestyle in Kazan and now such disappointment at trials. That is the story I would like to be discussed, because honestly speaking I am starting worrying about 800 relay that promised to be legendary
WRs happen …. when they happen, not necessarily as part of some linear pattern.
Relays don’t always play out as they would seem on paper. Its very rare that you’ll actually have all four “firing” at the one time … or when you have more than one stars, having both “fire” on the night. More often than not, it will be the team with the most even performance (ie W4XMED Kazan), or with least worst and/or one team having one absolute “stormer” leg that decides the race.
USA W4X200 looks prohibitive favourites and may very well break the WR; ditto AUS W4X100 …… but neither WR is the sure fire certainty some are predicting. In all honesty, all that the… Read more »
Maybe someday she’ll be honest and not act like every single thing in her life is so amazingly awesome. At least Phelps has been honest with his difficulties with swimming. It would be nice to hear her honest thoughts though.
I believe we are seeing her. Have been told that us her every day. Enjoy someone that has these quality so. Go Missy.
And Phelps waited until his 5th Olympics and turned 30 yo to do that?
I only referenced Phelps because he just recently opened up about many things and he’s the most famous swimmer.
There are other swimmers that appear to be much more honest with everything than Missy. I find it hard to believe that this past 1.5 years has been amazing as she leads us to believe–that’s all.
I agree that she seems to be a very bubbly person, but sometimes it’s too much for me to handle. No one has a perfectly happy life, and it’s difficult to listen to her routinely act like hers is.
