Breaststroker Jack Wallar has left the Indiana University program and will transfer to Division III Carthage College, where he’ll be a monumental addition to the Red Men program.

Wallar’s bests in the breaststrokes and the 50 free all came at the Hoosierland Invitational this past December. He came to the IU program with high school bests of 56.67 and 2:05.44, and his 200, especially, saw marked improvement in Bloomington.
With his lifetime bests, Wallar would have won both the 100 and 200 breast at the 2016 CCIW Championships, where Carthage finished 2nd by a narrow margin of 17 points to Rose-Hulsman. He’ll also likely take over as their medley relay breaststroker, and could lend a hand in the sprint free relays as well. Wallar’s best times are faster than conference records in both breaststrokes.
Wallar would also have scored in A finals of both breaststroke events at the 2016 NCAA Div. III Championships. Carthage was unable to qualify any swimmer to NCAA’s last season, though rising junior Chris Russo was just .12 off of the invited time in the 200 free.

Swimming is my life; I grew up swimming for fun, then swimming competitively, and now that I am in college I just want to enjoy the sport again while doing my very best. I decided to take a step away from IU, not because of the school, the coaches, or the swimmers, but because I was not enjoying the sport anymore. I am very grateful for the support I have from family and friends that pushed me to continue the sport I love. I will be swimming for Carthage College as a Redman, and I am very excited to continue swimming.
Carthage will head into its third season with head coach Seth Weidmann, who joined the program in 2014. Weidmann was honored as CCIW coach of the year in his first season (2014-15) with the Red Men.
Wallar is the second recent transfer to Carthage from the Indiana Hoosiers, the first being Russo who swam with Wallar their freshman year at Looze’s program. Weidmann brought in a whopping 17 freshmen to the men’s program this past season, and the Red Men will be gunning for the CCIW title in 2017 along with some NCAA appearances both individually and in relays.
As someone who has struggled to work my way onto an elite university team, I can understand where he’s coming from. It’s tough when you improve but still aren’t fast enough to really contribute. He’ll be a huge asset in D3, instead of a minor player D1. Not the decision I made, but one I respect
