Canadian swimmer Emily Overholt was forced to overcome a hamstring injury that occurred right after she qualified for the Olympic team in the 400m IM as she trained for the upcoming Games.
“I’ve kind of been dealing with that on and off since then,” said Overholt. “I feel really good right now and I’ve got a really good team supporting me so I’m confident that I did everything I can to be ready for the Olympics.”
Overholt finished third in the 400m IM at last summer’s World Championships, breaking out onto the international scene as one of the youngest medallists at the meet.
Following last summer’s performance, Overholt is a huge medal hopeful for Canada in the 400m IM.
Dealing with the injury has modified her training.
“My coach Tom [Jonhson] did a really good job of coaching around it,” said Overholt. “I did a lot of pull, I did kick here and there. I’m swimming normally now, I’m doing workouts with the rest of the team.”
While the injury was somewhat of a setback, Overholt is confident in her approach, “I still trained really hard, I just did it a little differently than everyone else.”
Overholt is currently in Toronto for team Canada’s staging camp for the Olympic Games. She’ll fly to Rio with the rest of the Canadian team on Friday.
