Greek Swimmer Sent Home from Olympics After Positive Doping Test

On the same day that it was announced that Russian swimming had gotten a pass for their previously-suspended athletes to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, a Greek swimmer has been expelled from the Olympic Village for a positive doping test.

The swimmer, whose name has not yet been revealed, had already traveled to Rio when the Hellenic National Council (Greece’s Olympic Committee) announced that she had failed a previous doping control test.

The NHC announced the positive test late on Friday evening Greek time (almost 11 PM), and while they did not give any clues as to the athlete’s identity, Greek media is suggesting that a swimmer is the one implicated.

An Irish boxer has also already been expelled from the Games after failing a doping test, as was Cypriot weightlifter Antonis Martasidis.

Including open water, Greece has sent a roster of 10 men and 5 women to swim at the Olympics.

The gold medal in weightlifting should be given to the participant with the clean test

Only the most stupid dopers get caught at the Olympics.

Guys like Sun Yang, Park Tae Hwan, Yuliya Efimova know that the best to dope is during the hard training to support cardio vascular system and for quicker recovery.

Yup, exactly. They know when to cycle off.

It’s a female – I knew exactly who it was as soon as I read this, a swimmer my friend told me about after seeing her at 2014 Euros. She didn’t swim at London 2016. I won’t say her name, but that last bit is a very big clue if you look at the tiny Greek team and who swam at 2016 Euros.

How can the results come back so fast for this athlete but it takes months and months for others?

My reading of the article is that the test was probably some number of months ago and the result was just announced. To quote from above, “…had already travelled to Rio when the Hellenic National Council announced that she had failed a previous drug test.”

But Efimova can compete and a lot of other Russian swimmers let me know how that’s fair 🙂
