The youngest swimmer in Rio, Gaurika Singh from Nepal, got off to a strong start in her first Olympic Games appearance. The young backstroker won her heat in the women’s 100 meter back this morning at just 13 years of age.
Singh’s heat-winning time was a 1:08.45, just a few tenths shy of her entry time (1:08.12). Her personal best time is a 1:07.31, which mad her the Nepalese National Record holder.
Overall, Singh finished 31st in the event. The top time in prelims this morning came from Team USA’s Kathleen Baker, who swam through prelims in 58.84. It took a 1:00.89 to place in the top 16 and advance to the semifinal.
This wasn’t Singh’s first appearance at a big international meet. Last summer, she swam the 100 back and 100 free at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan. There, she placed 81st in the 100 free and 58th in the 100 back.
