New Zealand’s distance star Lauren Boyle has missed out on the Rio 400 free final after placing 14th in prelims. Boyle posted a time of 4:07.90 this morning, over 3 seconds shy of the 4:04.36 it took to qualify for the final.
Last season, Boyle posted a 4:03.88, a time that could have made her a medal contender in Rio among a packed group of women who have been in the 4:03-range. At the 2012 Olympics in London, she just missed the podium with a 4th place finish in this race. In this Olympic cycle, Boyle has placed in the top 5 in the 400 free at all of her major meets.
In 2015 Boyle was the most elite distance swimmer, next to Katie Ledecky, at the World Championships. She was the silver medalist in the 800 and 1500 freestyles, and finished 5th in the 400 free.
Also of note, Denmark’s Lotte Friis has missed the final as well. Friis, an NBAC-based swimmer, placed 11th this morning with a 4:07.13. Friis finished just behind Boyle in London, getting a 5th place finish in this event.
Hard luck Lauren. Nothing worse than being sick before a major event.
Lauren has been sick, but not making it a excuse. No real comments/opinion on what ‘just to point out said’ but michelle coleman has been swimming very well of late and she trains in the group
Denis Cottrell’s group hasn’t been the same of late, No Jordan Harrison making the team (not even close) when he looked like he was going to be right beside where Horton is now, no Hackett making the team and Boyle missing a final she was looking to medal in. Lets hope that Tommy Fraser-Holmes can pull out a mean 200 free Circa 2014, after having a down 18 months after that outstanding year. One of the greatest coaches there has EVER been, I hope we see things pick up for his group.
