2016 Canadian Championships: Day 4 Finals Recap

2016 CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

The fourth and final day of the Canadian Championships will get underway with the 100 free, 200 fly, 100 breast, 400 medley relays, women’s 1500 and men’s 800 free.

Women’s 1500 Freestyle

  • Canadian Record: 15:57.15, Brittany MacLean, 2014 Pan Pacific Championships
  1. Olivia Anderson, ESWIM, 16:33.45
  2. Sophie Saroukian, KEYANO, 17:02.79
  3. Danica Ludlow, ISC, 17:10.63

The same three women have ended up on the podium for the 400, 800 and 1500 freestyle events in Edmonton. Oliva Anderson, who won the 800 and finished third in the 400, won the 1500 freestyle in a time of 16:33.45. Anderson finished almost 30 seconds ahead of Sophie Saroukian of the Keyano Swim Club, who finished second in the 400 and third in the 800.

Saroukian finished in a time of 17:02.79 followed by Danica Ludlow of Island Swimming who finished third in a time of 17:10.63.

Women’s 100m Free

  • Canadian Record: 53.31, Penny Oleksiak, 2016 Olympic Trials
  1. Ariane Mainville, CAMO,56.05
  2. Rebecca Smith, CASC, 56.72
  3. Sarah Fournier, CNQ, 56.95

A day after her sister, Sandrine Mainville, won an Olympic bronze in the 4 x 100 freestyle relay Ariane Mainville of CAMO took the women’s 100 freestyle at the Canadian Championships in a time of 56.05. Mainville also won the 50 freestyle earlier in the competition.

Rebecca Smith of the Cascade Swim Club finished second in a time of 56.72 followed by Sarah Fournier of CNQ who recorded a 56.95.

 

Men’s 100m Free

  • Canadian Record: 47.27, Brent Hayden, 2009 World Championships
  1. Stefan Milosevic, UBCDS, 50.58
  2. Carson Olafson, UBCDS, 50.79
  3. Chad Bobrosky, CASC, 50.85

UBC went one two in the men’s 100 freestyle. Sefan Milosevic finished first in a time of 50.58 followed by Carson Olafson who finished in a time of 50.79. Chad Bobrosky of the Cascade Swim Club, who finished second in the 200 freestyle, finished third in a time of 50.85.

Women’s 200m Fly

  • Canadian Record: 2:05.95, Audrey Lacroix, 2009 World Championships
  1. Maggie MacNeil, LAC, 2:16.07
  2. Mabel Zavaros, OAK, 2:17.68
  3. Megan Dalke, KCS, 2:17.88

The women’s 200 butterfly saw two 16 year old take the top two spots on the podium. Junior Pan Pacific Championships teammates Maggie MacNeil of the London Aquatic Club and Mabel Zavaros of Oakville finished first and second in the event. MacNeil took the event in a time of 2:16.07 followed by Zavaros who hit the wall in a time of 2:17.68.

Megan Dalke of the Kamploops Classic Swim Club finished third in a time of 2:17.88.

Men’s 200m Fly

  • Canadian Record: 1:56.90, Zack Chetrat, 2015 Pan Am Games
  1. Nicolaas Dekker, RAPID, 2:01.28
  2. Connor Wilkins, OAK, 2:02.47
  3. Gamal Assaad, OAK, 2:04.33

Nicolaas Dekker of the the Richmond Rapids Swim Club picked his second gold in a butterfly event of the competition. Dekker won the 100 butterfly on Saturday returned to the pool on Sunday to win the men’s 200 butterfly in a time of 2:01.28. He was followed by two Oakville swimmers Connor Wilkins and Gamal Assaad.

Wilkins touched the wall in a time of 2:02.47 followed by Assaad who posted a 2:04.33.

Women’s 100m Breast

  • Canadian Record: 1:05.74, Annamay Pierse, 2009 World Championship Trials
  1. Ashley McGregor, PCSC, 1:09.35
  2. Kelsey Wog, UMAN, 1:09.65
  3. Sarah-Lee Hevey, CAMO, 1:11.14

Ashley McGregor of the Pointe-Claire Swim Club and Kesley Wog of the University of Manitoba had a strong battle in the women’s 100 breaststroke. Wog had a slight lead of six one-hundredths of a second at the 50 meter mark, but McGregor was able to make up that time and more winning the event in a time of 1:09.35. Wog finished second in a time of 1:09.65.

Sarah-Lee Havey finished third posting a time of 1:11.54.

Men’s 100m Breast

  • Canadian Record: 59.85, Scott Dickens, 2012 Olympic Games
  1. Richard Funk, TSC, 1:00.93
  2. James Dergousoff, CHENA, 1:02.31
  3. Nick Kostiuk, KEYANO, 1:02.33

Richard Funk of the Toronto Swim Club won the men’s 100 breaststroke with relative ease finishing almost a second and ahead of the field. Funk won the event in a time of 1:00.93 he was followed by James Dergousoff of the Chena Swim Club who hit the wall in a time of 1:02.31.

Nick Kostiuk of the Keyano Swim Club, who just got nipped out for gold touching in a time of 1:02.33.

Men’s 800 freestyle

  • Canadian Record: 7:41.86, 2011 World Championships
  1. Peter Brothers, ISC, 8:01.94
  2. Tristan Tote, TSC, 812.43
  3. Jon McKay, UVic-PCS – 8:12.81

Peter Brothers of Island Swimming took the event in a time of 8:01.94 over 11 seconds ahead of Tristan Tote of the Toronto Swim Club how hit the wall in an 8:12.43. Jon McKay of UVic-PCS finished third in a time of 8:12.81.

Women’s 400m Medley Relay

  • Canadian Club Record: 4:05.89, UBC Dolphin Swim Club, 2011 World Trials
  1. PCSC, 4:11.94
  2. Cascade – 4:16.83
  3. VVic-PCS – 4:19.02

Men’s 400m Medley Relay

  • Canadian Club Record: 3:40.84, UBC Dolphin Swim Club, 2009 Mel Zajac
  1. Keyano – 3:46.89
  2. Chena – 3:48.33
  3. Oakville  3:49.48

The UBCD came away with the men’s title collecting 429 points while the Pointe-Claire Swim Club has a lifetime best of 475.5/
