The gold medal in the highly anticipated men’s 4×100 freestyle relay went to the American foursome of Caeleb Dressel, Michael Phelps, Ryan Held and Nathan Adrian last night at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium in Rio.
The squad proved to be just the right combination for the stars n’ stripes to hold off the likes of archrival France and ever-present competitor Australia, finally stopping the clock in 3:09.92 to stand atop the podium. The splits for each of the instrumental Americans are below.
GOLD: UNITED STATES – 3:09.92
Caeleb Dressel – 48.10
Michael Phelps – 47.12
Ryan Held – 47.73
Nathan Adrian – 46.97
Of note for Phelps in particular, the man threw down his fastest split ever. At 31 years of age and the fact that he’s at his 5th Olympic Games speaks to what kind of statement swim the most decorated Olympian of all time threw down last night.
Within that statement swim was a monster turn, one that saw him enter the wall slightly behind France’s Fabien Gilot, but resulted in the ‘GOAT’ well out in front due to his perfectly-timed flip, powerful push and enormous underwater.
In fact, Phelps’ longtime coach Bob Bowman told Yahoo Sports, “[That’s] probably the best turn that’s ever been done underwater. That was a serious turn.”
Catch Michael Phelps in action today as he swims his first individual event, prelims of the men’s 200m butterfly.
I dont want to watch these videos without Rowdy Gaines

Is there a link for the medal ceremony for this?
Any idea why the US broadcast has British commentators? I was forced to stream it last night on NBCOlympics.com and was disappointed to miss out on Rowdy Gaines’ and Dan Hicks’ call (say what you will about Rowdy, but you can’t deny he makes it exciting). It seems that all I can find online is the same droll British announcers.
I’m glad Bob Bowman and Dave Marsh aren’t idiots.
Jeremy Stravius had a very good turn too
