Leonardo De Deus Breaks Brazilian 200 Back Record

2016 RIO OLYMPIC GAMES

Leonardo De Deus set a new Brazilian national record in the men’s 200 back in the preliminary heats on Day 5 of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

De Deus placed 14th, and qualified for semifinals, with a time of 1:57.00. That time eclipses the previous record of 1:57.19, which was set by fellow Olympian Thiago Pereira at the 2011 Pan American Games.  It also marks over a half second improvement for De Deus over his qualifying time from the finals of the Maria Lenk meet early this year, where he touched in 1:57.57.

Pereira still holds Brazilian short course and long course national records in the 200 IM and 400 IM, as well as the short course 200 breast record.  He also competed this morning, swimming the 200 IM, his only event this Olympics.  Racing neck and neck against Michael Phelps, Pereira finished 5th overall, and will swim in tonight’s semifinals.

De Deus currently holds the Brazilian record in the 400 free, with a time of 3:49.62.  He also competed in the 200 fly earlier in Rio, advancing to semifinals, where he finished 13th.

The South American Record is held by Colombian Omar Pinzon who swam 1:56.40 at the 2009 World Championships – one of the few South American Records held by non-Brazilians.
