On the third night of competition at the 2016 Speedo U.S. Junior Nationals, the Carmel Swim Club boys were having a strong meet in particular.
The big swim didn’t come from Drew Kibler, though. While Kibler did post a lifetime best in the 400 free (3:55.49), it was 14-year-old Wyatt Davis who swam a very quick lead-off leg for Carmel on their 4×200 free relay.
Davis got Carmel to a lead in the final heat of the relay with a 1:53.57 swim, burning nearly three seconds off of a very recent personal best. He came into the meet with a 1:56.49 from the Indiana LC SwimFest Championships in late July, and with his new best, he also lowers his own Indiana 13-14 age group record.
Nationally, though, Davis’ time is very salient. The 13-14 NAG is a 1:53.31, a tie, actually, between Trey Freeman and Aidan Johnston, and Davis’ swim puts him at #5 all-time in the age group.
U.S. Boys 13-14 200 Free Rankings
- Trey Freeman, 1:53.31 (2015)
- Aidan Johnston, 1:53.31 (2015)
- Tom Kremer, 1:53.52 (2009)
- Nick Silverthorn, 1:53.54 (2010)
- Wyatt Davis, 1:53.57 (2016)
- Ian Crocker, 1:53.87 (1997)
Not only did Davis pass up the legendary Ian Crocker, but he is now less than three tenths away from the NAG record after being almost three seconds back at #43 before this swim. Davis will swim the 200 free and 100 back, two of his best events, later on in the meet. He’ll have at least a morning swim in the 200 free, but if he’s quick enough, he’ll get two shots at the record tomorrow.
