China’s Chen Xinyi, the 4th place finisher at these Olympics in the women’s 100 fly, was a no show for this morning’s 50 freestyle prelims.
Earlier this morning, SwimSwam’s Braden Keith reported that Chinese state run news agency Xinhua has published a confirmation from the Chinese Swimming Association that Xinyi has failed a doping test. Xinyi tested positive for the banned substance hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic.
In the 50 freestyle, Xinyi was the 13th seed going into prelims with her 24.53 from the 2o16 Chinese Nationals in Foshan. She’s likely also meant to be on China’s 4×100 medley relay squad after her performance in the 100 fly earlier in the meet, which will be swum after the men’s 1500 freestyle in today’s morning session.
Chen is seeking an expedited testing of her “B” sample and an appeal hearing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Under a new IOC process at the Olympics, the IOC will do initial research to decide if there was a “legitimate reason” for an adverse finding. If the IOC decides that there is a case, the CAS takes over to determine whether or not the athlete has committed an anti-doping violation.
