New Canaan High School senior Edward Rudman has given a verbal commitment to the University of Virginia for the 2017-18 season.
“UVA is an up and coming team and is just going to be better and I’m very excited to become a part of that growth.”
Rudman is the reigning Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference 50 free champion in the open division, having won the event by 8/10 with 20.43. He also finished fourth in the 100 back and anchored New Canaan’s 200 medley and 200 free relays. He split 20.08 at the end of the medley and a super swift 19.73 at the end of the free relay.
Rudman also swims for New Canaan YMCA Caimans. At the 2016 YMCA Long Course National Championships this past summer he placed fourth in the 50 free, going 23.94 for a personal-best by more than 4/10, and cracking the 24-second bar for the first time. At the same meet he took 3 full seconds off his 100 free time, rocketing into the B final from heat 2 (he had qualified for the event in SCY).
Rudman made similar improvements in short course season, dropping 1.3 seconds in his 50 free, 2.7 seconds in his 100 free, and nearly 9 seconds in his 200 free. He also improved significantly in the backstroke events. His top times are:
SCY | LCM | |
50 free | 20.43 | 23.94 |
100 free | 46.13 | 54.03 |
200 free | 1:45.30 | — |
50 back | — | 28.48 |
100 back | 52.44 | 1:02.66 |
200 back | 1:55.39 | 2:20.90 |
Rudman will join a Cavalier class of 2020 that will also include Cooper Wozencraft and Dylan Cudahy.

wow grubby 1 is a jerk let the kid live man, this kid will be a sub 20 beast
Lol! Sub 20 isn’t beastly anymore, buddy. UVA is simply casting a wide net hoping that some lower tier recruits pan out because they can’t recruit top talent like they used to.
This is not commentary of Mr. Rudman’s character whatsoever, more so, commentary at the level UVA is recruiting. Enjoy swimming for the Cavalier Nation. These are not conference championship challenging times. Mr. Busch has a ways to go if he is going to get UVA back to the Conference Championship level.

fairly honest comment, not trolling
The kid split 19.7 – as a junior. He’s on a major improvement trajectory – apparently dropped 1.3 in his 50 just last season. If he even drops one third of that his senior year, we’re looking at a 19.3 split in high school.
What universe do you live in where this kid is not a good recruit for UVA to want? Huge potential. And UVA men are undoubtedly in rebuild mode. This is exactly the kind of recruit UVA should be excited about.
