Miguel Valente set a new South American record in the men’s 800 freestyle on the fourth day of the Jose Finkel Trophy, which is Brazil’s Short Course Meters National Championship meet and Short Course World Championships selection event. Valente won the event in a time of 7:42.79 beating the old mark of 7:43.52 set by Armando Negreiros in 2009.

Valente was not the only swimmer under the old record as Brandonn Almedia finished second in a time of 7:43.06. Almedia also finished second in the 1500 freestyle by three one-hundredths of a second earlier in the competition.

Both Felipe Franca and Felipe Lima had strong swims in the men’s 100 breaststroke. Franca took the event in a time of 56.81 followed by Lima who hit the wall in a time of 56.96. The times put up by both men would have placed in the world’s top 10 last season.

Jhennifer da Conceicao had a tremendous race in the women’s 100 breaststroke taking the event in a time of 1:06.55 missing the South American record in the event by six one-hundredths of a second.

Joanna Maranhao continued to collect gold while setting her third championship record. Maranhao broke the championship record in the women’s 200 butterfly winning the event in a time of 2:07.17.

Leonardo de Deus won the men’s 200 butterfly in a time of 1:52.31.

SESI-SP won the women’s 4 x 100 freestyle in a new championship record time while the Pines relay won the men’s event in a time of 3:10.10.

Brazil’s best breaststrokers just went slower scm than Peaty’s split on the 400 medley relay in Rio.

Oh my bad didn’t realize this was a scm meet. still Jaeger slit 7:49-7:48 in rio, I’d like to see him aim for under 7:40 in LCM.
