Las Vegas, Nevada’s Carter Grimes has made a verbal commitment to swim for the University of Missouri beginning with the 2017-18 season. Grimes is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American from Centennial High School. As a freshman he was runner-up at the Nevada Division I State Meet in both the 500 free and 100 back. The following year he won the 100 fly and placed second in the 100 back. This past season he won both the 100 fly and 100 back.
Grimes swims year-round with Sandpipers of Nevada, and his strongest events are not contested in high school. He had a stellar year, culminating with lifetime-best times at the U.S. Open and Speedo Junior Nationals, where he finished third in the 200 fly and fifth in the 400 IM. Grimes also competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 1500 free and 400 IM. His best times are:
SCY | LCM | |
1650/1500 free | 15:21.33 | 15:48.09 |
1000/800 free | 9:14.54 | 8:13.37 |
500/400 free | 4:24.35 | 3:58.53 |
400 IM | 3:50.90 | 4:24.76 |
200 IM | 1:52.44 | 2:09.90 |
200 fly | 1:50.80 | 2:00.88 |
200 back | 1:50.11 | 2:06.98 |
Grimes would have scored 20th in the 1650 free at the 2016 SEC Championships, just ahead of Mizzou’s Nick Davis. His 500 free and 400 IM would have made the C finals.

Mizzou has a bad habit of cutting athletes from the team a couple of years into their program
