Chappaqua, New York-native Tyler Hill gave a verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina for the 2017-18 season. A backstroke and freestyle sprinter, Hill swims for Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua and BGC-N. Westchester Marlins in nearby Mt. Kisco.
Hill is the New York high school reigning champion in the 100 yard backstroke, and the bronze medalist in the 100 free. At the 2016 NYSPHSAA Federation Championships he won the back by over a body length with 50.08 and was third in the free with 45.95, in a race where the top three finishers all came to the wall with 45-mid to 45-high. Hill also anchored both Horace Greeley’s free relays, splitting a 21.04 and 45.56 in the 4×50 and 4×100, respectively.
In long course season Hill had an impressive meet at NCSA Summer Championships. He was runner-up in the 100m back with a lifetime-best 57.46, and also finaled in the 50 free (9th), 100 free (10th), 200 free (27th), 200 back (19th), and 100 fly (18th).
His best times are (SCY/LCM):
- 50 Free – 21.16/24.02
- 100 Free – 45.31/52.92
- 100 Back – 49.76/57.46
Hill may create a sense of déjà vu when he first arrives in Chapel Hill; there was another Tyler Hill on the Tar Heels’ roster but he graduated in 2015.
