With Hurricane Matthew looming in the waters southwest of the United States, the South Carolina High School State Championship meet has been pushed to October 14th and 15th – a week later than originally scheduled.
The meet, traditionally the first high school state championship in the country, is being held at the University of South Carolina.
As part of the reschedule, teams are not being allowed to schedule any other meets during the interim period.
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley announced that over 1 million South Carolinians are planned to be evacuated from coastal areas beginning Wednesday afternoon.
Hurricane Matthew passed through Haiti and arrived in Cuba late Tuesday evening, and Weather Underground currently projects the hurricane to be off the southeast coast of Florida by 2PM Thursday as a category 4 hurricane, and to weaken at least to a category 3 by the time it makes landfall sometime late Friday.
Current models show that the hurricane will make landfall at least once, somewhere on the Atlantic coast of Florida, Georgia, and/or South Carolina.
Wind speeds of Hurricane Matthew are presently at 140 miles per hour and the storm itself is moving north at 9 miles per hour.
The storm is already being blamed for at least 7 deaths – including 4 in the Dominican Republic. Haiti is expected to receive 40 inches of rain before the storm finally passes. It is expected to pass over the Bahamas overnight before headed toward the United States.
