VERMILLION, S.D. — The South Dakota women’s swimming and diving team opened its season with a 169-129 win against Minnesota State Friday night in the DakotaDome pool.
The Coyotes won 10 of 16 events. Senior diver Greysen Hertting began her chase at a fourth-straight Summit League Diver of the Year award by sweeping both dives. Freshman Sabrina Sabadeanu and sophomore Hannah Gupton each won two single events and one relay event.
Hertting continued her winning ways as she won the one-meter dive with a score of 260.63 and the three-meter dive with 315.30. Hertting will be looking to win her fourth straight one- and three-meter diving titles at the Summit League Championships this spring.
Sabadeanu quickly made her mark on the Coyote program as she won her first-ever collegiate event, the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:05.80. Next up for her was the 200-meter backstroke and she touched in with a first-place time of 2:21.76. She teamed up with Gupton and sophomores Abby Hollub and Theresa Godlewski to win the 200-meter medley relay with a time 2:01.65.
Gupton began her night with the 100-meter fly and was victorious with a time of 1:06.47. She and her teammates swept the 200-meter fly with Gupton touching in first with 2:32.81. SeniorsTayler Kirtley and Erin Kleiner placed second and third, respectively, with times of 2:37.17 and 2:39.86.
The Coyotes swept two more events. Kirtly won the 400-mter free with a time of 4:42.16. Sophomore Quinn Fawcett placed second with a time of 4:46.56 and junior Katie Svendson was third with 4:47.84. In the 800-meter fly, Fawcett took home the title with 9:38.29. Freshman Jordan thielbar came in second with 9:42.75 and Svendson was third with 9:45.43.
Freshman Charlton Mechling won the 200-meter freestyle in her first collegiate meet as she touched in with a time of 2:09.83.
The Coyote women continue the season in Grand Forks, N.D., and the men will join them for their first meet of the season. USD will take on North Dakota and Northern Colorado.

The Minnesota State women’s swimming and diving team opened its season with a 169-129 loss to the University of South Dakota Friday evening.
With the win, USD improves to 1-0 in dual action this season, while MSU drops to 0-1.
“The coaching staff was pleased with the performances from our first competition of the season,” head coach Nathan Owens said. “We did a lot of really good things and had some great races throughout the night against a Division I opponent. The meet was a great starting point for our team and something that we’ll build off of.
“I was really impressed with our freshman and how they handled a challenging order of events. Our diving squad, featuring three freshmen, had a very solid early season meet also. We’ll keep working hard to get better and get back after it again next week.”
The Mavericks won a total of six events, including five individual events and one relay event.
The 200-meter relay team of senior Cheyenne Rova, freshman Maggie Knier, senior Nicole Beanand junior Cecilia Hake turned in a top-finish of 1:50.22. They were followed by another MSU team consisting of junior Kylie Gaeth, sophomore Kate Barnes, freshman Kirsten Siebenga and juniorTaylor Bass, who turned in a time of 1:54.92.
Both Rova and sophomore Alycia Holwerda won a pair of individual events. Rova won both the 50-meter (27.00) and 100-meter (1:16.04) freestyle events, while Holwerda turned in the top times in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:16.04) and the 200-meter breaststroke (2:45.67).
Junior Chelsea Calhoon won the 200-meter IM event with a time of 2:32.23 as well.
Freshman diver Lauren Hake took second place in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 219.98, while freshman Jaycie Klein finished third in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 203.70.
The Mavericks return to action next week as they host UW-Eau Claire and Augustana on Friday, Oct. 14, at 5:00 p.m.
