SDSU Wins Double Dual Meet Against San Diego and Vanderbilt

San Diego State won seven individual swimming events, two relays and both diving competitions on Friday as it posted dual meet victories over UC San Diego (156.60-137.50) and Vanderbilt (168-94) at the Aztec Aquaplex. The wins improved SDSU to 4-0 on the season.

The Aztecs got the meet off on the right foot as they captured first place in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Alexa Clayfield, Morganne McKennan, Summer Harrisonand Alma Thormalm won in a time of 1:44.51.

Freshman McKenna Meyer was then victorious in the 100 freestyle. Her time of 10:10.19 ranks as the eighth-fastest time in program history and was the fourth-best mark at the Aztec Aquaplex.

Meyer, who was one of two double winners in the individual races for SDSU, also took first place in the 200 individual medley in 2:04.15. That time was the 10th-best ever by an SDSU swimmer and also ranks fourth for the Aquaplex.

Sophomore Cailey Steffens also won a pair of races although in each she shared the spotlight with a teammate who turned in an identical time. In the 50 free, Steffens’ mark of 24.05 was matched by Thormalm. In the 100 free, fellow frosh Peyton Wilson’s time of 52.40 allowed her tie Steffens for first place.

Morganne McKennan was victorious in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:04.82, a time that ranks as the ninth-fastest ever at the Aquaplex.

Junior Frida Berggren won the 500 freestyle in 5:01.88. She also picked up a second-place finish in the 200 butterfly in 2:03.13, the 10th-best time ever at SDSU’s home facility.

San Diego State’s other individual winner was freshman Kassidy Henson in the 200 freestyle where she turned in a time of 1:53.85.

San Diego State lone diver competing at the meet, Makena Chamoures, captured first place on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 261.91 and also won the 3-meter board with a mark of 282.30 points.

The Aztecs wrapped up the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay as the quartet of Thormalm,Megan Gianotti, Wilson and Steffens went 3:28.10. Their time tied for the 10th-fastest at the Aquaplex.

Up next for San Diego State is a trip to Corvallis, Ore., where it will take on Oregon State in a dual meet on Friday, Nov. 4, at 2:00 p.m. (PT).

Vanderbilt Press Release

The Vanderbilt swim team had a tough battle in its tri-meet on Friday in San Diego. The `Dores were edged out by UC San Diego 151-143 and lost to San Diego State 168-94. Vanderbilt earned many podium finishes in a meet that was filled with very close races and great competition.

The highlight of the meet was the upperclassmen for the Commodores, as they did most of the damage on the podium Friday afternoon.

Junior Kara Lucenti picked up the Commodores first win on the afternoon in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.11). Lucenti finished third in two of her other events, the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.00) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.04).

Fellow Junior Breanna Sapienza was the other Commodore to earn an individual win on the afternoon. She finished first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.13. Sapienza was part of the Vandy A relay team to place first in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:33.50) and she finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:45.65) to start of the meet.

Kayla Moran put together her most impressive meet this season as she picked up three podium finishes. She earned a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (56.89), finishing just behind teammate Breanna Sapienza. Moran was also in the Vandy relay teams, which finished third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.00) and placed first in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:33.50).

Kathryn Coughlin was another Commodore upperclassmen to put together a great showing Friday afternoon. Coughlin earned three podium finishes, second place in the 200-yard medley relay (1:45.65), second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.98), and third in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:39.41).

Vanderbilt freshmen Namilla Sanchez and Paige Hamilton also continued their early season success as the pair earned three podium finishes apiece. Sanchez placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.06), third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.61), and third in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:39.41). Hamilton finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:45.65), third in the 100-yard freestyle (52.43), and first in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:33.50).

The Commodores will have a few weeks off before they dive back in the pool again. Their next meet will be at Centennial Sportsplex against state-rival Tennessee on Friday, Nov. 4. The time for the meet is still TBD.

San Diego Press Release

The University of California San Diego women’s swimming and diving team opened its 2016-17 season against NCAA Division I programs Vanderbilt University and host San Diego State University Friday at the Aztec Aquaplex.

UC San Diego (1-1) beat Vanderbilt (1-4), rated 38th by CollegeSwimming.com, 151-143, but fell to 26th-ranked SDSU (4-0), 156.5-137.5. The Aztecs also defeated the Commodores in the double dual meet, 168-94.

Of the 14 swimming events contested on the afternoon, Tritons were fastest in three of them. Junior Julia Toronczak(Santee/West Hills HS) was UCSD’s individual highlight, sweeping the backstroke races. She went 57.74 in the 100 back, and then 2:03.30 in the 200.

The other individual Triton winner was Amanda Sumrow, a sophomore transfer from Northern Arizona and San Diego native (Patrick Henry HS), who hit the wall first in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:02.99. She was also third in both the 100 fly (57.03) and 200 individual medley (2:10.05).

Casey Brotherton, a true freshman out of Ladera Ranch, impressed in her official college debut, with a pair of second-place finishes in the two longest freestyle events of the meet. In the very first race of her Triton career, she timed 10:20.40 in the 1000 free, later going 5:03.40 in the 500 to best Vanderbilt‘s top offering in both.

Sophomore diver Brooke Abrantes (San Diego/Santana HS) accumulated maximum points, with scores of 243.41 on the one-meter springboard and 258.08 from three meters, but SDSU exhibitioned its only diver in action, Makena Chamoures (261.91 and 282.30, respectively), and Vanderbilt does not field a diving contingent.

In addition to Brotherton, other Tritons making their collegiate debuts were freshmen Anissa Barroso, Alayna Gocke,Tori Kaleta, Brooke Miles, Sophie Reynolds, Amanda Rios, Kaitlyn Ritchey, Elee Wong, Tiffany Wong, and juniorSarah Yao.

Jaimie Bryan was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.44) and fourth in the 100 (1:05.26). Fellow senior tri-captainNatalie Tang sprinted 53.19 for fourth in the 100 free and sixth in the 50 (24.46). Gocke took third in the 200 free (1:54.16), Miles fourth in the 200 IM (2:11.65), and Ritchey fourth in the 1000 (10:32.70).

The Tritons tallied four NCAA consideration qualifying times on the day, with Brotherton achieving one in both of her individual races. The other two came from Sumrow in the 200 fly and Toronczak in the 200 back.

The Triton men and women host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in dual meets on Saturday, Oct. 29, beginning at 12 p.m. at Canyonview Aquatic Center. Admission and parking are free.
