Brian Yuen, a senior at Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas, died after experiencing a medical emergency after a swim meet on Saturday morning.
Reports haven’t delved into specifics, but multiple different outlets have reported that Yuen “began to experience a medical emergency” after a swim meet at the Don Cook Natatorium. (ABC News has a story here; and The Houston Chronicle also reports with that wording here.)
Yuen was rushed to a hospital, where he died later on Saturday.
The school district released a statement in support of Yuen’s friends and family. Per ABC News:
“The Fort Bend ISD family is heartbroken following the death of a Clements High School student athlete this morning. During a swim meet at the Don Cook Natatorium, a student began experiencing a medical emergency after competing in an event. FBISD staff immediately called 9-1-1 and provided assistance until paramedics arrived at the scene. Sadly, we learned the student passed away after being transported to a local hospital.”
“The loss of a child is an unimaginable tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family and friends during this extremely difficult time. District crisis teams will be at CHS and our other high schools when classes resume Tuesday. In the meantime, District staff are working closely with CHS administrators to provide immediate support to the student’s fellow athletes.”
The Houston Chronicle reports that Yuen’s younger brother was also at the pool when the medical emergency occurred.
Yuen was in his senior year at Clements High and also competed for the First Colony Swim Team. A vigil for Yuen will be held at the Don Cook Natatorium pool at 5 PM on Sunday, and Yuen was honored and remembered with a moment of silence during a football game between Ridge Point and Dulles, with the crowd all wearing Yuen’s favorite color: blue.

Man that hits close to home for me. Crazy to think that could have been me or one of my teamates after just what would have been a normal in season highschool meet down near the naval base. This is sad. Poor kid just 18 and about the enter the best part of his life. Lets just take a moment to be thankful that you are still alive and have gotten to experience life. Some are not so fortunate. Dont waste youre opportunity, be someone who deserved to experience life, do something good tommorow.
