2016 Signing Day: The SwimSwam Index of Class of 2017 Commitments

And we’re off to the races. The Early Signing Period for the high school class of 2017 opened today at 7:00 am, wherever a “prospective student athlete” resides. As we explained here, the weeklong Early Signing Period stretches, this year, from November 9, 2016 to November 16, 2016. Beginning today, athletes in many NCAA sports –among them swimming and diving– are invited to sign the National Letter of Intent (NLI), the agreement between the college and the prospective student-athlete whereby the institution promises an athletic scholarship and the athlete promises to attend the school.

Signing Day is a big deal for the student-athlete; it rewards him or her for years and years of hard work. It is also a big deal for the collegiate sport of swimming and diving, which is put on center stage across the country with all the other sports offering NLIs to high school athletes.

At SwimSwam, we get just as excited about “our” athletes signing their NLIs as you do. We love to see how many different schools provide opportunities for swimmers and divers of all levels. As of 8:00 am on Signing Day (athletes are not allowed to sign NLIs before 7:00 am in their home time zones), we have written commitment articles on 720+ swimmers and divers. And we have another 40 or so in the works! Our articles, when viewed in aggregate, tell the story of swimming at the collegiate level in the United States. They tell where the athletes are coming from, where they’re going, where they’re needed, and whose footsteps they’re following.

We’ve written about some really big hitters (https://staging.swimswam.com/see-swimswams-top-20-hs-girls-recruits-2017-committed/  and  https://staging.swimswam.com/see-swimswams-top-20-hs-boys-recruits-2017-committed/) as well as swimmers joining brand-new programs (e.g., Oklahoma Christian University). In the spreadsheet below, you can follow along by sorting by conference, by college, by state, by high school, by LSC… however you would like to view the trends. We’ll update this list as we continue to wrap up more recruits, so bookmark this page, and keep refreshing it over the next week.

Hint: Click on “View full-size workbook in the lower right-hand corner to see all columns at once. Click the button at the top of each column to filter or sort.

How long will it take for the index to be complete? It has been several days since I sent in a report and was curious when I could see the commitment in the index.

What gives with USC Men’s recruiting? Trenton Julian, whose father Jefff is a USC assistant and whose mother Kristine Quance was an All American at USC, signs with Cal.

Either click on the “View full-size workbook” button on the bottom right and sort by the “USAS Club” column, or ctrl-F and search for *Diving*

Did you try looking under “New Hampshire?” She’s been there since the article was published.

Don’t see Robin Neumann [NED] or Natalie Tuck [PASA] on this list for the Cal women, as of 11/10?

The Golden Bears had signed up 7 swimmers & 3 divers for the class.

Thanks.
