On July 4, 2016, French water polo player Hugo Fontani was selected for an in-competition doping control test. It was conducted during a water polo match of the French ProA Championships held in Strasbourg, France.
It was later found out that Fontani tested positive for the prohibited substance Tuaminoheptane (Class S.6 Specified Stimulants). Tuaminoheptane is primarily used as a nasal decongestant drug but is considered relevant for sports drug testing due to its stimulating properties. Some other prohibited substances included in the Class S.6 Specified Stimulant category are: Epinephrine (adrenaline: Not prohibited in local administration), methylephedrine and pemoline.
Fontani plays for the Strasbourg club in French’s highest level of professional water polo.
The Disciplinary Panel of the French Swimming Federation imposed a sanction of two months’ ineligibility for Fontani. His sanction began on October 28, 2016 and will span until the end of December.
