Watch: Cam McEvoy & Mathematician Adam Spencer Invent “Swysics”

Video courtesy Australia’s Science Channel.

Watch above as Australian Rio 2016 Olympian Cameron McEvoy (also known as “The Professor”) talks with mathematician and stand-up comedian Adam Spencer about his love of physics at this fall’s 2016 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science ceremony.

Throughout the video, Spencer and McEvoy cover McEvoy’s balance of swimming and science, the similarities and differences between the worlds of science and swimming, and time management.

At one point, Spencer asks McEvoy who would be the “associate professor” out of the field of Australian athletes. .

“Well, Australian sports is riddled with extremely intelligent people,” McEvoy said. “You have Mitch Larkinjunior world champion, Olympic medalist who’s doing engineering. You have Michelle Jenneke, hurdler, doing engineering. You have a guy called Justin James, who’s doing something that… I couldn’t even tell you the degree. It’s something to do with international relations and counterterrorism, and it’s really interesting stuff.”

He then goes on to mention American Olympic silver medalist Josh Prenot, who is studying physics at Cal.

Then, McEvoy and Spencer bounce around some ideas for their new sport “swysics.”

“You’d get a question, and then maybe a 400 because it gives you a bit more time to think about the question,” McEvoy explained to laughs from Spencer, “and then you’d come out and do another question. So, it’d be more for the longer distance ones, but I’m all for it. If somebody comes up with it, I’ll do it.”

Ah yes but it opens up opportunities for others. There is no blowback because Kyle stepped thru .( like Jodie Henry in 2004 in lieu of Lenton) .

MCevoy was too protectionist withdrawing from the 200 & losing his spot in the relay. Now his chances for olympic gold are about the same as his other dream – going to space in a NASA ship – not much .
