San Diego State Takes First In All 14 Events Against Pepperdine

San Diego State captured first-place honors in all 14 events Friday afternoon as it swam to a 133-114 win over visiting Pepperdine at the Aztec Aquaplex. No diving was contested during the meet that saw seven SDSU athletes finish first in at least one of the 12 individual races and four others contribute to first-place finishes in the two relays.

Junior Summer Harrison and freshman McKenna Mayer earned three individual victories apiece to lead the way for San Diego State.

Harrison took top honors in the 50 and 100 freestyle races with times of 23.90 and 52.20 respectively before capturing first in the 200 individual medley in 2:11.20.

Meyer began her run in the 200 butterfly, winning with a time of 2:07.70. Later she won the 200 backstroke (2:07.80) and 200 breaststroke (2:27.40) in back-to-back races without a break. She was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay team that closed out the meet.

Frida Berggren was a double individual winner for the Aztecs as she captured both the 100 backstroke in 58.60 and the 100 butterfly in 57.10. She was also on the victorious 200 freestyle relay squad.

Four other Aztecs also took first in their individual events. Madeline Garcia won the 1000 freestyle in 10:53.02 while Marina Preiss captured first in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.50. Alma Thormalm was victorious in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.60 with Martina Marks winning the 500 freestyle in 5:10.62.

SDSU opened and closed the meet with wins in the two relay races. In the 400 medley relay, the foursome of Alexa Clayfield, Cecilia Zaccarelli, Thormalm and Samantha Guttmacher took first in 3:53.94.

The meet’s finale event, the 200 freestyle relay, saw the Aztec quartet of Marks, Berggren, Meyer and Peyton Wilson win in 1:39.00.

San Diego state will now have a break from competition until it competes at the UC San Diego Invitational on Monday, January 2 at the Canyonview Aquatic Center in La Jolla, Calif. The following day with Aztecs will have a double dual meet vs. Rice and San Jose State at the same site starting at noon.
