Fanny Teijonsalo To Compete At FINA Short Course World Championships

After nearly qualifying for the Rio Olympics last summer, FGCU sophomore swimmer Fanny Teijonsalo will add to her already impressive international rsum as she competes in the 2016 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) held at the WFCU Arena in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, from Tuesday, Dec. 6 through Sunday, Dec. 11.

Teijonsalo (Espoo, Finland/Makelanrinteen Lukio), who will represent Finland at the Championships, will be joined by former Eagles Lani Cabrera and Karen Vilorio – representing Barbados and Honduras, respectively – to help make up the field of nearly 1,000 of the world’s best swimmers from more than 176 countries.

Over six days, the Championships will feature 46 events, including 34 individual races and 12 relays. Also, a list of the events that Teijonsalo, Cabrera and Vilorio are scheduled to compete in this week is included below.

At 20 years old, Teijonsalo has already represented Finland at a number of international meets including the 2015 FINA Long Course World Championships in Kazan, Russia, the 2015 LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships in Netanya, Israel, and the 2016 LEN European Aquatics Championships in London. Additionally, Cabrera and Vilorio each have Olympic experience as the first competed in Rio in 2016 and the latter qualified for London in 2012.

UP NEXT
In its final competitions prior to the holiday break, the #26 FGCU diving team will travel to Coral Springs, Fla., to compete against Clemson Wednesday, Dec. 14, while the swimming team will host CCSA opponent UNC Asheville at the FGCU Aquatics Center Sunday, Dec. 18. The Green and Blue are 33-1 all-time against conference foes after defeating UNF, 159-95, earlier this season.

HEAD COACH DAVE ROLLINS
First-year head coach Dave Rollins became the program’s second head coach in program history on Sept. 1, 2016. Most recently the associate head men’s swimming coach at The Ohio State University, Rollins brings 10 years of coaching experience at the club, high school and collegiate levels. A standout collegiate athlete in his own right, Rollins was a nine-time NCAA All-American and national champion as a member of the University of Arizona swimming & diving team from 2002-06.
