Matias Koski took down the Finnish national record in the men’s 200m freestyle this morning, touching in at 1:43.68 in order to win his heat and set him up for a spot in tonight’s final.
Koski’s time broke the previous Finnish record by about half-a-second, bettering Antti Kavio’s mark of 1:44.14 that he set all the way back in February of 1992 at a world cup in Paris, France.
Koski is headed into finals seeded fourth overall behind Dylan Carter of Trinidad, Aleksandr Krasnykh of Russia, and Myles Brown of South Africa. His time puts him in the position to medal tonight if he’s able to get a little closer to that 1:43-flat mark.
Six of the eight finalists this morning were under the 1:44 mark, adding to the competitiveness of this field. With such a tight knit group, almost anybody in the top eight could find themselves on the podium tonight.
