Worrell Posts 3rd Fastest US Time Ever in 200 Fly

2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Kelsi Worrell continues to look like she’s in great form for these world championships.  Yesterday, she smoked a 51.04 split on the USA’s gold medal 4×100 free relay.  This morning, she posted the top time in the prelims of the 200 fly, a 2:03.94, almost a second and a half faster than Yufei Zhang and Katinka Hosszu, the next two fastest finishers.

That time also moves Worrell up to number three all time among USA swimmers, putting her in a great place to take the American Record in this evening’s finals session.

The American Record currently belongs to Cammile Adams, who posted a 2:03.39 to win the 2015 Duel in the Pool last December in Indianapolis.  The 2nd fastest American time currently belongs to Kathleen Hershey, who went 2:03.49 to win the 2011 version of the Duel of the Pool in Atlanta.

Tonight, Worrell will have to contend with the Iron Lady, the aforementioned Hosszu, who has a loaded schedule this week, to say the least, but will not have to face the current world record holder in this event, Mireia Belmonte of Spain, who missed the finals after finishing 19th this morning.

Kelsi is swimming really well right now, I felt for her when she did not make finals of 100 fly in Rio, I guess combination of nerves and inexperience got to her a bit. I hope she will break American record tonight

Me too. I was definitely very upset for her when the Chinese athlete in 8th place tested positive for something after the race. It cost her a place in the final, and possibly a medal. Hopefully she will continue to progress.
