Disclaimer: BlueSeventy Swim of the Week is not meant to be a conclusive selection of the best overall swim of the week, but rather one Featured Swim to be explored in deeper detail. The BlueSeventy Swim is an opportunity to take a closer look at the context of one of the many fast swims this week, perhaps a swim that slipped through the cracks as others grabbed the headlines, or a race we didn’t get to examine as closely in the flood of weekly meets.
The year after an Olympic Games always signals a shift, with a number of prominent athletes retiring or taking breaks and a new, young generation starting to ascend to Olympic-level swimming.
For Italy, the future is starting to look bright, in large part thanks to Thomas Ceccon.
The 15-year-old Italian sprinter broke a national age record this week, going 50.42 in the 100 long course meter freestyle. That took two tenths off the Italian 15&under record of 50.62. On the world level, Ceccon is now within one second of what 2016 Olympic champ Kyle Chalmers did at age 15 – Chalmers still holds the Australian age record at 49.68.
Typically, sprints favor older, more developed athletes, especially on the men’s side. But Chalmers’ surprise win in Rio proved that youth can be effective in the sprint races, making Ceccon all the more dangerous moving forward.

Was following Chalmers’ story lead and I can’t believe I got this prediction correct… I’m normally bad in prediction.
