Ashley Twichell and Chip Peterson have each taken two events to lead the field in earnings after the second night of finals at the KMSC Pro-Am. This unique meet offers $600, $300 and $100 prizes for the top three professionals based on their absolute finish, with those amounts doubled for both the 1650 freestyle and for the winner of the 50 free tournament bracket style shoot-out.
Twichell (9:27.48) and Peterson (9:11.00) took wins in the 1000 free on Thursday night without much of a challenge from the amateur field, but each of their second wins during the Friday finals were close calls. Houston Swim Club’s Logan Schiller challenged Twichell throughout the entire 200 freestyle, but fell just short of the top prize, touching in 1:47.15 to Twichell’s 1:47.08. Peterson was behind with 50 yards to go in the 400 IM but managed to crank out a 25.50 final split to steal the lead away from Houston’s Davis Bryan, out-touching him 3:59.93 to 4:00.45.
Other notable swims so far:
- Houston Swim Club’s Kylie Powers crushed the all-amateur field in the women’s 100 breast by over three seconds, finishing in 1:01.25.
- Chuck Katis edged below the 53 second mark in the men’s 100 breast, touching in 52.98, just ahead of Michael Alexandrov at 53.33.
- Schroeder Y’s Hannah Saiz took the top prize in the 100 fly by over 2.5 seconds with 53.35.
- Former SMU standout and Lithuanian Olympian Mindaugas Sadauskas snuck past Giles Smith and Bryce Bohman from lane three to take the win in the 100 fly with 46.32.
- Hannah Sumbera from Houston Swim Club finished strong on the last leg of the women’s 400 IM, winning the event by just over three seconds in 4:22.79.
- 16 year old Ryan Bailey from ATAC took the 200 freestyle title in 1:40.98, winning by nearly 1.5 seconds over the amateur field.
- Schroeder Y has been dominant in the women’s relays, taking the top finish in the 200 medley (1:44.77,) 800 free (7:30.94,) and 400 free (3:28.20) relays in the first two scoring sessions of the meet.
Finals continue at 5pm on Saturday and 4:30pm Sunday, Central Time.
