Hosszu with 4, Andrew with 1 victory at Swim Cup Lausanne, day 1

Swim Cup Lausanne, Switzerland

The city of Lausanne, located in Switzerland, is the home of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA). The first Lausanne Swim Cup takes place on December 17 and 18 at the local swim club’s facilities on Lake Geneva, the “Piscine de Mon-Repos”.

On day 1 the Iron Lady, who starts for her own swim club Iron Aquatics in Lausanne, Katinka Hosszu, swam her way to 4 victories. She touched first in the 50m backstroke in 26,51 and in 400m IM in 4:25,13 – 27 seconds faster than second place finisher Alexandra Froissart. And Katinka Hosszu grabbed the wins in the 200m backstroke in 204,38 and the 100m IM in 58,63.

Hosszu earned 937 FINA points for her win in the 400 IM – the top ten FINA performances of the meet, men and women combined, will earn some extra bonuses (in addition: 18.000 CHF, about 17.500 USD, 500 CHF are around 490 USD):

  • #1 CHF 4000
  • #2 CHF 3000
  • #3 CHF 2500
  • #4 CHF 2000
  • #5 CHF 1500
  • #6-10 CHF 1000 each

US national Team members Anthony Ervin and Michael Andrew also travelled to Switzerland for some more fast swims in 2016: Andrew finished first in the 100m IM in 53,11 ahead of Marco Koch (GER, 53,18) and he earned the second place in both, the 50m fly (23,17) and the 50m back (24,08). Anthony Ervin missed the finals in the 100m freestyle with a time of 51,05 in prelims.

Germany’s double SC World Champion 2016 Marco Koch won the 100m breaststroke in 57,30 ahead of South Africa’s Cameron van der Burgh (57,90). Michael Andrew picked up the third place in 59,17.

Other winners:

  • Medhy Mettela (CN Marseille, France) took home the win in the men’s 50m fly in 23,05.
  • His teammate Benamin Stasiulis took the win in the 50m backstroke in 23,91.
  • Hungary’s David Verraszto pushed ahead of the 400m IM field, winning the race with a 4:07,37.
  • Charlotte Bonnet (France) was the fastest woman in the 100 m freestyle, touched in 52,95.
  • Zsuzsanna Jakabos touched the wall first in the 200m Butterfly in 2:12,58.
  • On the men’s side, German Philip Heintz was the winner in the 200m fly in 1.54,25.

The competition continues on Sunday morning with heats in

  • 200m breast, 200m free, 100m fly, 100m back, 200m medley, 50m breast, 50m free, 400m free,

with A and B finals for 50s, 100s and 200s and A finals for 400s in the evening.

About 40.000 CHF (39.000 USD) will be awarded as follows (note: 500 CHF are around 490 USD):

  • CHF 500 for each event winner (16 events – 50/100/200 of each stroke, plus 100/200/400 IM and 400 free)
  • CFH 200 for each performance in excess of 900 FINA points
  • CFH 18,000 for the top ten FINA performances of the meet, men and women combined:
    • #1 CHF 4000
    • #2 CHF 3000
    • #3 CHF 2500
    • #4 CHF 2000
    • #5 CHF 1500
    • #6-10 CHF 1000 each

A Ervin went to Switzerland to not even make finals in the 100 free? He did the same at world cups. Why does he bother going to these?. Clearly he is capable of doing better as he proved in the Olympics.
