San Diego State Picks Up Wins In Double Dual

San Diego State picked up a pair of dual meet wins on Saturday as it defeated visiting Fresno State (160-116) and New Mexico (150-125) at the Aztec Aquaplex. The two victories allowed the Aztecs to improve to 9-0 in dual meet competition this season.

The Aztecs captured eight of the 12 individual races along with one relays top dominate the action in the pool. They were led by Frida Berggren, who won both the 200 butterfly (2:03.80) and 400 individual medley (4:23.38). She was SDSU’s lone swimmer to win more than one individual event.

San Diego State’s other first-place finishers included Alma Thormalm in the 100 freestyle (52.16), Summer Harrison in the 50 freestyle (23.99), Courtney Vincent in the 1000 butterfly (56.06), Clair Voss in the 1000 breaststroke (1:09.43), Kate Santilena in the 100 backstroke (58.97) and McKenna Meyer in the 200 freestyle (1:53.89).

The Aztecs opened the day’s action by winning the 200 medley relay as the foursome of Alexa Clayfield, Morganne McKennan, Harrison and Thormalm turned in a time of 1:44.85.

Diver from all three teams are competing at the UCLA diving Invitational this weekend and their scores are being factored into today’s double dual meet. The one-meter diving is scheduled for tomorrow for the scores are not official until those results are received Sunday afternoon.

Prior to the start of the meet, the Aztecs honored six senior making their final collegiate appearance at the Aquaplex. Those athletes included Santilena, Andrea VanderMey, Caroline Mitchell, Cece Zaccarelli, McKenna Garfein and Samantha Guttmacher.

Up next for the Aztecs is a trip across town to face the University of San Diego in a dual meet on Friday, Jan. 20, at 1:00 p.m. at USD’s Sports Center Pool.
