Marist & Rider Take MAAC Swimming Weekly Accolades

Men’s Swimmer of the Week

Justin Carey, Rider
Fr., 5’11”, Landenberg, PA/Avon Grove

In a dual-meet victory against in-state rival Seton Hall, freshman Justin Carey won four events and set two pool records. Carey was victorious in the 100-back (49.96 seconds), 200-back (1:51.51), 100-butterfly (49.84 seconds) and teamed up with three other Broncs to win the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:34.37. He set the new pool record at Coppola Pool in the 100-back, when he became the first Rider swimmer to break 50 seconds. His second record breaking performance was in the 100-fly when he broke the record with a time of 49.84 seconds.

On Monday in a dual-meet against Georgetown University, Carey earned two more first-place finishes. He added a win in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:55.05 and also the 200-back with a time of 1:50.81. Over the week, Carey totaled six first place finishes.

 

Women’s Swimmer of the Week

Meredith Wurtz, Marist
Sr., 5’9”, Lafayette Hill, PA/William Penn Charter

Meredith Wurtz placed first in two of her four events in Marist’s 171-120 victory over Southern Connecticut State on January 10. Her two wins came in the 100-yard freestyle (53.89 seconds) and the 200-yard medley relay (1:53.30). Wurtz also notched two second place finishes on the day in the 50 and 200-yard freestyle events.

On January 14, Wurtz was victorious in all four of her events despite a close loss to Boston College. She touched the wall first in the 50-(24.41 seconds), 100-(52.99 seconds), and 200-yard freestyle (1:56.93) events. In the 100-yard freestyle event, Wurtz posted her season best dual-meet time. Touching the wall at 3:37.85, Wurtz anchored the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team.

 

Men’s Diver of the Week

Joseph Warker, Rider
So., 5’8”, Reading, PA/Wilson

In a dual meet against Seton Hall last week, sophomore Joseph Warker won both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. With a score of 266.17, Warker topped the closest competitor by more than 20 points sealing his first place victory in the 3-meter. In the 1-meter dive, he totaled a score of 279.82, topping the second-place finisher from Seton Hall by over 40 points.

On Monday in a dual meet versus Georgetown University, Warker finished second in both the 1-meter (261.15) and 3-meter dives (254.32). Warker narrowly missed the top-spot in the 3-meter dive by .82 points.

 

Women’s Diver of the Week

Lauren Katz, Marist
So., 4’11”, Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake

On January 14 in a meet against Boston College, Lauren Katz won both of her diving events on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. She totaled 235.58 points at the 1-meter and 248.78 points at the 3-meter in a close team loss to Boston College.

On January 10 in Marist’s win over Southern Connecticut State (171-120), Katz added eight points to the victory. She took second place in both of her diving events with 219.90 points in the 1-meter and 225.67 points at the 3-meter.
