Northwestern Earns Verbal Commitment from Breaststroker Becky Kamau

Becky Kamau, of City Of Birmingham Swimming Club in Birmingham, England, has verbally committed to swim for Northwestern University starting in 2017-18.

“I chose Northwestern because it’s somewhere that is going to give me the incredible support both in the pool and out that I need to succeed in the upcoming 4 years. NU women’s swimming is where I’m going to enjoy being pushed in order to reach Tokyo 2020.”

Kamau is originally from Nairobi, Kenya. Her family moved to England six years ago so she could have access to the higher level of training there. She now owns Kenyan national records in the LCM 200 free (2:04.81), 400 free (4:28.56), 200m breast (2:29.65), 100 fly (1:03.74), 200 fly (2:27.11), 200 IM (2:18.60), and 400 IM (5:01.55). Her SCM records include 200 free (2:02.34), 400 free (4:32.21), 200 breast (2:28.59), 200 fly (2:22.33), 100 IM (1:03.71), 200 IM (2:14.81), and 400 IM (4:44.18).

Kamau’s top LCM events (with SCY conversions) are:

  • 100 breast – 1.10.12 (1:01.36)
  • 200 breast – 2.29.65 (2:11.21)
  • 200 IM – 2.18.60 (2:01.98)
  • 200 free – 2.04.81 (1:49.55)

Kamau will bring back good memories for fans of Northwestern Women’s Swimming and Diving. The Wildcats’ last top-8 scorer at NCAAs was another breaststroker: Jenny Wilson, who graduated in 2012. Wilson’s 59.61 in prelims at 2012 NCAA Division I Championships smashed a decade-old school record and qualified her for the A final, in which she ended up placing eighth and earning First Team All-American honors.

Kamau will join Rachel Tseng, Sophia Schott, and Sophie Angus in Northwestern’s class of 2021.
