NCAA Swimulator Individual Swimmer Power Rankings

Sometimes rankings swimmers is easy. Katie Ledecky is the best women’s swimmer. Andrew Wilson is the best swimmer in Division 3. Sometimes it’s not easy. Is Lilly King the best women’s swimmer in the Big 10? Her 100 breast is clearly the strongest single event of any swimmer in the conference, but she isn’t nationally competitive in her third event. Cierra Runge and Zhesi Li both have 3 nationally competitive events, but no single dominant event.  Points scored at conference/nationals breaks down outside the very elite swimmers and even among elite swimmers, doesn’t account for margin of victory or relative event depth.

One approach is Swimulator‘s  power point system for ranking swims. To rank swimmers, we take the sum of the power points in each swimmer’s top 3 events. This approach requires swimmer’s be versatile while still rewarding swimmers for strong top end events. For example, Lilly King, despite her 3rd event rating 70 points lower than any other 3rd event from swimmer in the Big 10 top 5, is 2nd in the Big 10 because of the dominance of her breaststroke. Perhaps this approach undervalues relay events (i.e. a fast 50 swimmer is more valuable to their team than a fast miler), but this is an individual swimmer ranking, so I think this is a valid approach.

We’ve done lots of team rankings  (D1 big conferences, D1 small conferencesD2, D3 part 1, D3 part 2), but haven’t looked at individuals yet. Here’s the top 5 rankings for each division and each D1 conference. These rankings are based on times performed so far this season and are not intended as a prediction of end of season rankings. Just who’s been the best so far. If you want to look at the lower division rankings pick the division, gender, and conference you want on the Swimluator page.

It would be nice if there were totals with each person to make comparisons easier.

For what it’s worth, almost all D2 conferences (and obviously D2 NCAAs) are 4-day meets in which a swimmer can theoretically swim up to 4 individual events. Might want to take that into consideration for those rankings?

Not going out on a limb here assuming that KL swims the 500 on day 1 and 1650 on day 3. Is there a 0% chance she swims the 4IM on day 2 instead of the 2free? I can’t think of a strong argument to support this other than I’d like to see an easton-ledecky matchup. Please and thankyou.

I have a hard time seeing the 200m Olympic champion not swimming the 200. The 200y free is more of a sprint than 200m but still….I think she does 200 free since she has a much bigger chance to win that.

Also, Stanford has the defending 400 IM champion already competing in that event. While Manuel has a good shot at winning the 200 free, I feel like Eastin is more of a sure bet. Therefore, it makes sense to put Ledecky in the 200 for team score purposes.

Not necessarily. Stanford has a lot more depth in the 200 free than the 400 IM. In the 200 free they might swim Manuel, Neal, Drabot and Stafford, all with a chance to score. In the 400 IM it’s just Eastin and Szekely. For a chance to pick up the extra 3 points by winning the event (which Manuel might win anyways), they’re certain to cost them selves at least a point or two by bumping down more of their own swimmers in the 200. I think Ledecky in the 400 IM makes perfect sense from a team score perspective. However, the difference is probably only a couple points one direction or the other so that might not be the… Read more »

I vote the 400IM cause she will scare Eastin to a record swim.

Fascinating article! It would be great to see the same power point rankings after NCAAS. Please formulate the Relay Power Point as well! Ledecky is clearly worth 969 points. Wilson at Emory is also worthy in that league.

I like this stat as far as it goes, but there is a shortcoming as well, namely relays. 28.5% of the points scored at NCAAs will be in relays (43.5% of the points scored in just swimming events). None of the above quantifies the potential impact on relays, thus omitting an important part of the picture.

I can envision a stat similar to WAR in baseball analytics – create a statistically average NCAA qualifying relay, then replace a leg on that relay with the swimmer in question. You could then see the expected improvement or decline in team placing (and point scoring) to indicate the true impact of the swimmer in that relay event.

This brings up the classic sports question of best vs most valuable. Should we weight someone’s skill less due to the fact that their events aren’t as highly valued by the event schedule? A swimmer who finals in three sprint events might be more valuable to their team than a swimmer who sweeps the distance events, but I think the distance swimmer is likely the “better swimmer” relative to the competition in their chosen events.

The other practical problem is that relay splits aren’t as readily available as individual times. Katie Ledecky will probably put down an incredible 100 free split on a relay at some point this year, but is unlikely to have a tapered individual 100 free time.… Read more »

Thanks the explanation. I understand that it’s difficult to gather and process split times, and recognize the challenge of weighing some non-relay swimmers less (like distance swimmers). However, I think you should acknowledge that your methodology omits the skill of some swimmers as well – namely anyone who can swim a fast 50 in the strokes. For example, I’d argue that Lily King’s 50 breast in the 200 Medley relay is a real swimming skill that is not being properly credited to her at all in her “top 3” in your methodology – shouldn’t we also be taking that skill into account when were evaluating who should be considered to be “the best?”

Yes, this is a flaw. However, I like the fact that the current set up rewards some level of event diversity. I think that including 50’s of stroke might be double counting a single skill, sprinting in a specific stroke. Most people that can do an elite 100 can do an elite 50 in that stroke. The same isn’t necessarily true for 100s and 200s. This system already gives credit to swimmers for their 50 and 100 free times, but that can’t really be avoided at those are both individually contested events. Sprinters don’t need more advantages when judging swimmer quality.

In a perfect world where we could easily get relay splits, the 50s would be included in some way.… Read more »

Keene State with a mention, they used to be animals in the distance events. Why do they only have like 10 guys on their team?

A little weird that Clark Smith’s 14:32 in the mile, which is very close to what it takes to win NCAAs, is only worth 1 point more than a 42.45 in the 100 free (Ringold), a time that probably won’t final at NCAAs.

Good point. The points are calculated based off of the distribution of all times done in that event. So the 1650 gets fewer untapered times than other events. If we included the 1000 freestyle, you could see its skewed the opposite way. We’re working on correcting this.
