Duke’s Alex Peña and NC State’s Andreas Vazaios have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Male Swimmers of the week. Blue Devil teammate Anna Quinn and Clemson diver Freida Lim have been tabbed the ACC Women’s Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively.
Peña was under the NCAA provisional standard in two individual events over the weekend. He placed third in the 200 freestyle and won the 200 backstroke, where his performance of 1:44.38 clocked-in as the second-best Blue Devil time in school history. The junior also placed second in the 50 free where his time of 20.22 was the eighth-fastest in school history.
Vazaios recorded two first-place finishes and two second place finishes at the Carolina College Nike Invitational this past weekend. The junior’s 200 IM (1:44.43) and 200 fly (1:43.46) was the best in the conference this season. Those two times, plus his 100 free (43.51) leadoff leg in the 400 free relay were pool records for host-site, Duke. All four of his times qualified as NCAA ‘B’ cuts.
Quinn finished strong at the Janis Hape Dowd Nike Invitational Sunday, besting the field in the women’s 200 butterfly, coming in under the NCAA provisional standard at 1:59.19. The junior also raced to a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly in 54.75.
Lim, a two-time Women’s Diver of the Week this season, posted two NCAA Zone qualifying scores this weekend as Clemson travelled to the JMU Diving Invitational. The freshman placed second on the three-meter with 307.55 points and third on the one-meter with 278.55 points.
