The University of Toronto men and women took home both OUA Championship titles Saturday night as they edged out their competitors with two very decisive leads to establish their dominance heading into the U Sports championships at the end of the month.
En route to establishing their victories, Toronto swimmers managed to break five OUA records on the final night of competition on home turf. The first record to fall was the men’s 200m medley relay record.
Kyle Haas led the team off with a 25.57 followed by Eli Wall in 27.49. Edward Liu split a 24.07 on the fly to hand things off to Cameron Kidd who rocked a 22.28 in order to touch in at 1:39.45 and break the previous record of 1:40.18 set by UT in 2014.
Following the men’s relay record, Olympic bronze medalist Kylie Masse stepped up to the blocks to race the 50m backstroke. In a time of 26.62, she bettered her 26.75 performance from last season to break the OUA record in the event.
Matt Dans backed up Masse’s performance with a 53.06 winning time in the 100m butterfly. His time bettered Gamal Assad’s 53.16 OUA record that he set back in 2016.
Arguably the most impressive record of the night came at the hands of Hochan Ryu. The UT swimmer emerged victorious in the 400 IM to win with a time of 4:16.12, smashing a 33-year-old OUA record set by Alex Baumann in 1984. Baumann was a 4:16.80 at the 1984 OUA Championships prior to winning the event at the Olympic Games a few short months later.
The final record of the night came in the women’s 400m freestyle relay where the UT squad tied Western‘s 2014 mark of 3:45.60.
For their performances at the meet, both Hochan Ryu and Kylie Masse were named the OUA athletes of the week.
