LSU Promotes Geyer to Head Swim Program

On the same day as we heard  from LSU team captain Sean LeNeave that the team was “100 percent” behind promoting former assistant David Geyer to take over the helm of the swim program from the recently resigned Adam Schmitt, it looks as though they have gotten their wish.

Geyer and Doug Shaffer were promoted to be co-head coaches of the LSU Swimming and Diving program, said LSU director of athletics Joe Alleva today. Geyer will head the swimming, and Shaffer will head the diving. The two men will share in the overall direction of the program.

Geyer will have lots of great pieces to play with, as LSU’s last recruiting classes were both ranked in the top 15 by collegeswimming.com. Geyer will also have the chance to revive the career of Mary Beck, who was one of the best high school swimmers in history before transferring from Cal to LSU last year.

In addition to his duties with LSU, Geyer has led Tiger Aquatics, LSU’s USA-Swimming arm, to high levels of success in his four years of leading them.

Shaffer, who was promoted to head diving coach/co-head program coach, was named the 2008 SEC Women’s Coach of the Year, has led LSU to 11 diving All-Americans, and has coached 5 out of the last 6 SEC Freshman Divers of the Year.
