Women’s 500-yard Freestyle – Prelims

Sophia Kuvan of Kenyon kicked off the 2017 Champoinships with a 5.3-second improvement to win heat 1 of women’s 500s with 5:01.50. Delaney Ambrosen, also of Kenyon, won the following heat over NYU’s Haley Wen, 4:56.94 to 4:57.62.

Wash U junior Nicole Zanolli blasted a 4:53.85 to win the first circle-seeded heat over Emory’s Maria Turcan (4:57.41). Denison senior Campbell Costley dropped just over a second to win the penultimate heat with 4:51.50. Kenyon sophomore Hannah Orbach-Mandel was 4:52.37 for second, an improvement of 2.3 seconds; third went to DePauw senior Angela Newlon (4:56.49).

Illinois Wesleyan senior Meg Stanley took the final heat with 4:53.19, just edging Marysol Arce of Kenyon (4:53.41) and Lauren Jones of Williams (4:53.41).

Bowdoin freshman Marshall Lowery dropped nearly 6 seconds to win the opening heat in 2:09.63. Johns Hopkins junior Gwyneth Lamastra went 2.1 better than her seed time to win the next heat with 2:07.33. MIT freshman Katharine Pan also dropped 2.1, winning heat 3 in 2:06.21. Kalamazoo senior Colleen Orwin nearly matched her seed time as she won heat 4 in 2:05.98.

Bates senior Sara Daher claimed the first circle-seeded heat in 2:02.93, a tick better than her seed time. Ithaca senior Grace Ayer was second (2:03.85), just ahead of Bowdoin sophomore Sterling Dixon (2:04.93).

NY freshman Honore Collins popped a speedy 2:01.42, bettering her entry time by 1.5 seconds, to lead the field in the penultimate heat. She was followed by Emory sophomore Julia Durmer (2:03.16) and Carnegie Mellon freshman Emma Nicklas-Morris (2:04.04).

Emory senior Annelise Kowalsky won the final heat with 2:01.94, followed by Kenyon junior Julia Wilson (2:02.25, a 3.5-second improvement), and Williams senior Olivia Jackson (2:02.34, a 2.5-second drop).

There was a swim-off for 16th place between Williams freshman Caroline White and Denison junior Halli Garza, both of whom stopped the clock in 2:05.45. White just out-touched Garza, 2:05.28 to 2:05.53, the second time around.

In a tough break for Denison, Katherine Kustritz was disqualified in her heat.

Women’s 50-yard Freestyle – Prelims

Amherst junior Stephanie Moriarty sliced 1.2 seconds off her seed time to win heat 1 of the women’s 50 free with 24.16. Emory junior Julia Wawer also dropped 1.2, winning the following heat in 23.44 and earning a spot in the B final. Williams sophomore Maia Hare claimed heat 3 in 23.82. MIT senior Veronika Jedryka led a very fast heat 4, touching in 23.39 (-6/10) ahead of Emory senior Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe (23.52, -3/10). Emory senior Marissa Bergh won the final heat before the circle seeds in 23.21, a half-second improvement from her seed time.

Wheaton senior Erin Bagley took a tenth off her entry time to win heat 6 in 23.24 over Eau Claire sophomore Samantha Senczyszyn (23.48). St. Thomas senior Emma Paulson was in front of the field in the next-to-last heat, edging Calvin junior Abby VanHarn, 22.97 to 23.15. Paulson was the first to break 23 seconds. Emory sophomore Fiona Muir stopped the clock at 23.77 to win the final heat, missing the meet record by .06 and the NCAA mark by .10. She was followed by Williams junior Emma Waddell (22.84) and Whitman senior Tai Hallstein (23.38).

Women’s 200-yard Medley Relay – Prelims

Emory led the qualifiers of the 200 medley relay with a 1:41.01, just half a second off the NCAA record, with strong performances from Cindy Cheng, Kowalsky, Sanchez-Aizcorbe, and Megan Taylor.

Ithaca senior Nickie Griesemer scored 474.35 on the 3-meter board to lead Day One diving qualifiers. MIT freshman Vivian Zhou was next with 461.20 points, followed by 2016 consolation final winner, Centre College junior Sarah Hayhurst (453.80). Last year’s runner-up, Maura Sticco-Ivins of Wellesley, was fourth with 448.10 points, just ahead of the 2016 bronze medalist, Meghan Bartlett of SUNY Fredonia (446.20).
