Harnish Downs State Record with 1:44.7 200 Free at PIAA 2A Champs

2017 PENNSYLVANIA 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Georgia commit Courtney Harnish, a West York senior, demolished her own State Record in the 200 free at the 2017 Pennsylvania 2A State Championships. Harnish finished over 5 seconds ahead of the field, flipping in 51.04 en route to her 1:44.73 victory. That took over a second off her former PIAA Record of 1:45.91 from the 2014 meet. She then popped off a personal best 54.03 in the 100 back, winning her 2nd individual gold of the meet and coming within a quarter of a second of Allie Szekely’s PIAA Record (53.80).

Ellwood City’s Taylor Petrak and Highlands’ Bailey Bonnett were also multiple event winners. Petrak swept the sprints, posting a 22.94 to barely miss the PIAA Record (21.91) in the 50 free. She followed that up with a 50.42 in the 100 free to win by over a second.

Bonnett, on the other hand, put on dominant performances in the 200 IM and 100 breast. She got the ball rolling with a 2:00.80 in the 200 IM, finishing over 2 seconds faster than anyone else. Bonnett then stepped up for the 100 breast, where her winning time of 1:00.84 was a new PIAA Record, taking down the former mark of 1:01.09 set by Lauren Barber in 2015.

Allentown’s Gabe Castano was the only man to win 2 individual titles on the men’s side with his sweep of the sprint freestyles. Castano surged to a 20.50 in the 50 free, setting a new PIAA Record en route to gold. The former mark stood at a 20.57 set by Daniel Gosek in 2011.

He returned to the pool for the 100 free, where he battled with Salisbury standout Mehlon Reihman. Through the first 50, Castano established his led with a 21.31 split, and was able to maintain his edge to win gold in 44.78 ahead of Reihman’ 45.29. Reihman won a gold of his own earlier in the session, posting a 1:39.38 in the 200 free.

There is an error in the results the Girls top 5 should be the Boys top 5. I was a member of the Schuylkill Valley Boys Team and most of the Girls Team Points came from our Bronze Medalist in 2 events
