Hickory Foundation YMCA 16-year-old Ross Dant went 8:57.64 to win the boys 1000 free on opening night of YMCA Short Course Nationals. That came close to a YMCA national record and checks in inside the top 10 all-time for the 15-16 age group.

That’s a drop of more than 10 seconds for Dant, who was most recently 9:07.6 at the Winter Junior Championships in December. He won the event by about three and a half seconds and came within about two of Nick Caldwell’s YMCA national record.

That time ranks #9 all-time in the 15-16 age group, passing up Nick Norman on the list. Dant is 12 seconds off the National Age Group record set by Matthew Hirschberger in 2015.

In the girls 1000, York YMCA went 1-2. Courtney Harnish was 9:39.92 to pick up the win, still about six seconds off her best time. Harnish – ranked as the #1 recruit in her class – will attend Georgia next year. Her teammate Leah Braswell went 9:48.55 to finish second.

The Birmingham YMCA boys qualified first in the 200 free relay, going 1:23.52. Meanwhile the girls 200 free relay’s top seed went to Bath Area Y, with a time of 1:33.29. They’ll swim finals of those relays on Tuesday night.
