Bella Smits Gives Verbal to Nebraska-Omaha After UND Cuts Program

Isabella (Bella) Smits of Andover, Minnesota has verbally committed to swim at the University of Nebraska, Omaha starting in the 2017-18 season, landing on her feet after learning that the University of North Dakota, where she had committed last fall, would be cutting its swimming and diving program.

“Learning that the University of North Dakota cut their swim and dive program was a complete shock and such a disappointment. When you think your life is heading down one path and you hit a road block like that it can be pretty discouraging. The University of Nebraska, Omaha was there from the very beginning letting me know they were very interested in having me swim there and wanted to show me how UNO could be a great fit for me. I eventually chose UNO because of the family-like team atmosphere, fantastic facilities and the superior academic support and Business program at UNO. Jess is very motivated to take my swimming to the next level and the girls on the team were so welcoming and fun. I am beyond excited to start my future as a Mav next fall!”

Smits is a senior at Andover High School, where she swam for Marcia Ford and won Andover’s first-ever state championship in the 100 free. She swims year-round for FASTjets out of Blaine, Minnesota under Cale Schmidt-Jackson. A seven-time state champion and Sectional and Junior National qualifier in multiple events, her best SCY times are:

  • 50 Free: 23.20
  • 100 Free: 50.40
  • 50 Back: 25.97
  • 100 Back 55.61
  • 200 Back 2:02.64
  • 100 Fly: 55.88

Smits is an Academic All-American, a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team member, and a member of the National Honor Society.
