Mesa Showcases the Best C/D Flight in Arena Pro Swim Series History

2017 ARENA PRO SWIM SERIES – MESA

There were only a small handful of scratches from the A or B finals on Thursday, the first night of the 2017 Arena Pro Swim Series at Mesa.

The biggest among those is Finnish national Matias Koski, who scratched out of the A final of the men’s 400 free. Koski, a versatile freestyler who’s A-final caliber in everything from the 50 to the mile, qualified 8th for the final with a 4:01.85. His scratch moves teenager Isaac Stump (4:01.97) into the A final.

For those who usually tune out after the completion of the A and B finals at Arena Pro Swim Series meets, it might be worth sticking around on Thursday for at least the beginning of the C/D flight. That’s because the men’s 100 free C and D finals will be as stacked as a D final ever is at these meets.

That heat will include 2016 Olympic 50 free champion Anthony Ervin, junior phenom and Olympic Trials finalist Michael Andrew, and U.S. National Teamer Dillon Virva. Just before it, in the C final, former National Teamer Michael Weiss; backstroke Olympic champ Matt Grevers; Arizona State star freshman Cameron Craig, and 18-year old Ryan Hoffer who is the 8th-best 100 yard freestyler in history; will all be racing.

Other Top-Flight Scratches in Thursday’s Finals:

  • Mark Jurek scratched out of the B-Final of the men’s 100 fly. He qualified 16th with a 55.17 from prelims. Jurek is a two-time Arizona high school state champion in the 100 yard fly.
  • Four-time Olympic medalist Amanda Weir scratched out of the B-Final of the 400 free after a 4:22.67 prelims swim. Weir’s primary history is as a sprint freestyler – she qualified 6th in the 100 free. She was 17th in prelims, and only would have been in the B Final because Mallory Comerford also scratched out (10th qualifier, 4:18.76).

After that scratch, Ledecky would’ve made the Men’s A final
